Wednesday Wink || Giñada divina

feature-draft1

B”H

Welcome back to another installment of Wednesday Wink – JewishLatinPrincess’ series on Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence). You can find earlier editions of Wednesday Wink on the Soul Talk section. The purpose of this series is to sensitize us and make us aware G-d’s involvement in every detail of our lives (albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation).

Today’s Wink is what I shared at the Shabbat Kallah that I told you about on Monday. The feedback from the kallah (bride) and the other ladies was so warm and positive, that I thought I’d share it with all of you today. As you’ll see, I’m addressing the kalah (bride) directly…

The last time I spoke at a Shabbat Kallah, was ten and a half years ago at my own Shabbat Kallah. Back then, I shared with my friends the twists and turns of events that resulted in me sitting there as a kallah (bride). By then, I realized the amazing Hashgacha Pratit in so many events that had led up to that day. I knew that the hand of G-d had been so miraculously involved in me and my husband having met and having gotten engaged (and married).

Based on my recognition and vivid awareness of Hashgacha Pratit at the time, I spoke about the importance of living our lives with that awareness. I won’t bore you will all the details of my story, but I will share with you a similar message to the one I shared that day, except now, I have ten years of marriage “under my belt.”

There’s a story in the Midrash about a matron – a very wealthy non-Jewish woman- who came to Rabbi Shimon Ben Chalafta and asked him, “In how many days did G-d create the world?” Rabbi Shimon Ben Chalafta answered, “In six days.” She then asked, “And what has He been doing since then?”

Rabbi Shimon Ben Chalafta responded, “G-d has been making shiduchim (matches). He is busy deciding which man goes to which woman, when and where these two should meet, and so on, and so forth. He’s busy putting couples together.”

The woman said, “That!? That, I can do myself!” So, Rabbi Shimon Ben Chalafta told her, “To you it might seem easy, but to Hakadosh Baruchu, this is as hard as the splitting of the Red Sea.”

The woman went back to her home. There she gathered a thousand male servants and a thousand female servants and paired “this one, with that one…” She paired all of them, and ordered them to go live together as husband and wife.

The next morning, the matron faced a sight of absolute chaos. This servant came to her with a poked eye; another one with a broken arm…. All the “couples” were complaining, “I can’t live with this man; I can’t live with this woman…” Havoc. She quickly calls for Rabbi Shimon Ben Chalafta. Upon his arrival, she tells him, “You were right! Your G-d is great.”

¡Chaos, total! La mujer rápidamente convocó al Rabino Simón Ben Jalafta. Al verlo le dijo, “¡Tenías razón! Tu Di-s es grande.”

The Sages give a lot of insights to this story, and its various meanings. (More here on the story.) I just want to give you a practical thought connected to it, based on my experience.

Over the last ten years, my husband and I have had the privilege to share with many couples at our Shabbat table – couples within the first few weeks of marriage, first year of marriage, forty years into the marriage, and everything in between. We’ve very often asked them the story of how they met and ended up together. We have loved and been fascinated by each story, as well as the experience of the couple re-telling their unique story. It became obvious to us that every couple has a story. Then, after a while we realized that there’s a lot more to this. That is, not just that every couple has a story; but rather, that every couple needs to have a story!

A few weeks ago, during the Sukkot meal, you and your chatan (groom) told us your story. It’s a cute story; an amazing story. But, it’s not my story. As I heard it I could see all the twist and turns, and “coincidences” that happened in order for you guys to meet, and end up together. However, I don’t have the emotional connection to the story. You have it. I didn’t experience the story.

You have an emotional connection, because you understand everything that took place and clearly see all the little miracles that occurred in both of your lives, in order to get to this moment. You understand the Divine intervention in a very real way. It is your story.

Throughout married life, there are ups and downs, highs and lows- times of bliss, and challenging times. When facing either the ups or the downs, a person could potentially gravitate towards two extremes. Both, are a result of the same problem- lack of awareness of G-d.

During a “high” point in life, a person can attribute the “success” to himself, becoming arrogant. This reflects a lack of acknowledgement of Who had a hand in the blessings; Where is this good situation really coming from?

On the other extreme, a person could be going through a low, a challenge, and could then very easily become angry and/or depressed. In this situation, the person is attributing the “failure” or the “low” to him/herself. In other words, showing a lack of acknowledgement of the hand of G-d. Who had a hand in all this? Where is this really coming from?

The Jewish approach is to see the Hashgacha Pratit, the Divine Providence in everything, in order to stay in balance and not fall to either extreme, when riding the highs and lows of life. The Jewish way is to understand that the same G-d who is with you in the lows, is with you in the highs, and vice versa.

Where do we draw the understanding of Hashgacha Pratit? First, and foremost, we can draw it from our story!

Your story of Hashgacha Pratit, by virtue of which you are sitting here as a kallah today, is incredibly vivid, clear, and real to you right now. In the future, you can turn to your story, to remind yourself that there’s Hashgacha Pratit. The same G-d that made all these miracles (seemingly coincidental occurrences) happen for you to get to where you are today, is the One with you at every twist and turn in life, at every point in your married life, at every high and every low.

Thus, we need our story!  And thus, the matron said, “You were right. You’re G-d is great.”

So my blessing to you and your chatan (groom) is that you should hold on to your story, keep it fresh and alive in your mind; and that you should have a life full of joy. Real joy. Not one driven by the externalities of life, but one that comes from within- from the understanding that you are constantly united with your Creator. And in the merit of your marriage and all the amazing things that will come from it, may we all experience the ultimate collective joy with the coming of Mashiach, speedily in our days.

——-

Mazal Tov, to the Chatan and Kallah! And may you, my dear readers, all have a beautiful week.

Yael

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
