B”H

Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to another installment of Wednesday Wink – JewishLatinPrincess’ series on Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence). You can find earlier editions of Wednesday Wink in the Soul Talk section of the blog. The purpose of this series is to sensitize us to, or create awareness of G-d’s involvement in every detail of our lives (albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation).

So, I couldn’t resist, and decided to tie in today’s Wednesday Wink to the upcoming holiday of Purim!  After all, Hashgacha Pratit is a major theme in Megillat Esther. Did you know? Let us see.

As you might recall, there is something very unusual about this whole Megillah. We celebrate a major miracle – the annulment of the decree of annihilation of the entire Jewish nation. As part of our joyous celebration, we read the Megillah, where we find the events that led to the decree being enacted, and later on revoked. However, the very odd thing about this Holiday is that the name of G-d does not appear in the Megillah even once! A bit strange…

In fact, the story is presented in such a way, that if we weren’t Jews – naturally sensitive to G-d’s Divine intervention – one would very easily think that each of the events in the Megillah were a series of amazing coincidences and random facts that ended up working out.

Read it. It’s the coolest story, more suggestive of a Shakesperean play than of a religious text. Let me give you a quick synopsis.

  • The drunk king gets angry at his queen and has her killed!
  • Of all the maidens in this vast kingdom, the extravagant king chooses Esther – a nice, unassuming Jewish girl – as his replacement queen.
  • Versed in many languages and dialects, Mordechai happens to overhear Bigsan and Teresh’s plan to kill the king.
  • Mordechai tells Queen Esther about the plot.
  • Queen Esther tells the king and credits Mordechai.
  • However,  the king forgets to reward Mordechai.
  • Haman plots to exterminate the Jews and the king agrees.
  • The queen and all the Jews in the city fast for three days.
  • Esther goes to the king after the three-day fast, risking her life, as he hadn’t summoned her.
  • But, instead of getting killed, the king is so enamored by her that he offers her up to half of his kingdom!
  • The king wakes up with insomnia in the middle of the night.
  • His servant reads him his Book of Records (instead of being told to count sheep or take homeopathy) to try to bore him to sleep.
  • While listening to what is recorded there, he remembers that he hasn’t repaid Mordechai for saving his life.
  • Haman, happens to be walking in the palace, anxious to meet with the king and fine tune his extermination plan, when the king commands him to honor Mordechai for saving the king’s life.
  • The following scene is totally humiliating for Haman and hints of his upcoming downfall.
  • Smelly and covered in his own garbage (which his daughter “accidentally” threw on him), Haman is rushed to join the “party” with the king and queen.
  • Queen Esther then accuses Haman before the king, to be the villian who wants her and her people dead.
  • Hearing for the first time that she’s a Jew, the King does not question her for a second.
  • Just as fast as he had approved Haman’s decree to kill the Jews, he orders Haman’s execution.
  • The decree is then revoked and all the Jews live happily ever after.

Sounds like a Shakespere play, no?

Suena como una obra de Shakespere, ¿no?

As you see from the above, these could very well be a set of coincidences, that happened to work out to the advantage of the Jews. Yet, we know there’s much depth to this and nothing was random in the story.

In fact, the story is so profound because of the seemingly-random occurrences. In contrast to many other stories of our nation, such as the Exodus from Egypt, G-d never “appears” in the Megillah’s scene. He is able to orchestrate all this without fanfare, without breaking the laws of nature,  announcing “Hey, here I am; I am G-d and I am saving you!” And that my friends, is a higher level miracle.

Actually, that is exactly the way that G-d manifests Himself in the Megillah of our lives. (Hence, the Wednesday Wink series ;-)… )

There is a halacha (Jewish Law) that says that one who reads the Megillah backwards, does not fulfill his obligation of hearing/reading Megillat Esther on Purim. The Baal Shem Tov explained the deeper meaning of this halacha as follows: one who reads the Megillah with the idea that this is a story that happened a long time ago and of little relevance to his/her life today, does not adequately perform the mitzvah of reading the Megillah on Purim. One must read it with the understanding that the events of Purim are pertinent to one’s life today…

So, in next week’s Wednesday Wink, we’ll talk about another key message of Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence) in Megillat Esther that we can all apply to our lives today. In the mean time, my friends, there is so much to learn in Megillat Esther. If you haven’t studied it in depth, I recommend you take the next few weeks before Purim to do so. You will not be disappointed!

Have a lovely rest of your week, and one full of Winks!

Yael

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
