B”H

Good morning, everyone!  Welcome back to another installment of Wednesday Wink – JewishLatinPrincess’ series on Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence). You can find earlier editions of Wednesday Wink in the Soul Talk section of the blog. The purpose of this series is to sensitize us to, or create awareness of G-d’s involvement in every detail of our lives (albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation).

So, here we are at the continuation or Part 2 of last week’s Wednesday Wink, related to Purim and the Hashgacha Pratit in the story of Purim. Last week we discussed the idea of H” being “hidden” in the Megillah, and allowing all of the events therein to happen as though they were mere coincidences. These set of “coincidences” led to the salvation of the Jewish nation. This week we’re going to touch on an even more personal message that the Megillah gives us, with regards to Hashgacha Pratit.

When the edict of annihilation of the Jewish nation comes out, there is a very telling interaction between Mordechai and Esther.

Mordechai tells Esther to go to the king and advocate for the Jewish nation. Esther replies in the negative. She says that she has not been summoned by the king for thirty days. She reminds him that according to the law, anyone who goes to the king, unsommoned, will be put to death.

Mordechai then tells her:

“Don’t imagine that you alone, out of all the Jews, will escape by being in the king’s palace. Actually, if you stay quiet now, the Jews will find relief and safety through a different route… And who knows – perhaps the monarchy came your way precisely for this moment!”

This is, to me, the most important line in the entire Megillah. What Mordechai is telling Esther is something that we must continuously ask ourselves. As Mordechai pointed out, the question facing Esther was not, whether the Jews will be saved. That will happen no matter what. H” has infinite ways to deliver salvation.

The real question here is, what role are you going to take in that? Are you going to accept the role that H” has granted you in the plot, or not?

We all have a special role that H” has assigned us. H” gives us each certain talents and gifts, and then awards us opportunities and situations – all divinely ordained (Hasghacha Pratit). The question at any given moment is: given those capabilities and those set of circumstances, what are we going to do? Are we going to take part in fulfilling our mission to perfect this world, or are we going to allow the opportunity to pass us by, with us as mere spectators?

Of course, Esther could not argue with this last statement. She immediately replied that all the Jews of Shushan should fast for three days. She would do the same and then go to the king on the third day, and risk her life. Here, she shows a profound understanding of the deeper reality of the situation. This is not a mission that required political diplomacy alone. First, and foremost, it required spiritual work. What kind of suicidal mission is she in for? To go to the foolish king after three days of fasting and unsummmoned!? Of course, we all know that she succeeds in her mission and the Jews are ultimately saved, through her.

As Jewish women, H” has awarded us a natural sensitivity to a deeper reality. That is, the reality that G-d intervenes in every detail, and that His G-dliness, concealed in everything, is waiting to be revealed.  (Cool visual explanation on this concept in this post.) We, just like Esther, have the ability to make that revelation happen through our actions. And collectively, we can achieve the ultimate revelation with the Final Redemption, may it be speedily in our days.

Have a lovely rest of your week!

¡Que tengan una linda semana!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
