Upshernish continued || La continuación del Upshernish

April 21, 2015 by Yael 3 Comments

Hi! Today I’m going to tell you some more about the spiritual significance of the Upshernish and the physical elements that enhanced the significance of the day. If you missed the first post on the Upshernish, you can find it here.

¡Hola!

I had shown you here our Aleph Bet (Hebrew alphabet) chart in progress. You might say, couldn’t you have bought one? Yes. However, they are not cheap; and they are not necessarily the size or design I wanted. But, most importantly, this was a fabulous way to get my budding artists involved — stenciling, cutting and gluing away! Black and white cardboard from the Dollar store, and a black plastic frame from Ikea, and we had our Aleph Bet chart.

Why did we need it? In the picture above you see the Aleph Bet chart, a bottle of honey, a bag of coins and a charity box. Let me explain… Three years old is when the “formal” education of a child begins. I say formal because, of course, we educate our children from their very first moments in the world. Nevertheless, the age of three marks a cognitive development milestone, in which a child can begin to grasp information at a different level than before.

We want to communicate to the the child, who will now begin “formally” learning Torah, that learning Torah is sweet. We do this by pouring honey over the letters (on top of the frame) and the boy can lick the honey as he recites letter by letter. (Some also have the custom to throw candies at the young boy, to emphasize this idea of Torah being sweet.) In our family we also have the custom that the boy should says some or all of the 12 verses of Torah (more on this here); and of course he gives tzedakah (charity), as do all those who approach to snip his hair.

So what’s with the hair? We cut the boy’s hair for the first time on his third birthday, educating him on the mitzvah of leaving the peyot (side locks). He also begins wearing his kippah and tzitzit as I mentioned here. In a nutshell, it’s a day of transition between the baby stage and entering childhood.

I’ll also add that the G-dly soul of a Jew enters the body in stages: at birth, then at three years old, and finally at the age of Bar and/or Bat Mitzvah. It is this that makes our son’s third birthday extraordinary — a very special day for a Jewish family!

We had not taken family pictures since our oldest, now nine, was two! So, we decided  this special day would be the time for a good family photoshoot. I can’t thank the talented Elisheva Golani enough for the wonderful experience and for the amazing pictures!

Aside from all of the above, and the desserts and drinks that I shared here, we also had activities for the children. A few tables with some games connected to wearing a kippah and to learning the Aleph Beit; and my favorite: a ‘pin the kippah and tzitzit on Menachem’ game! My daughter’s wonderful and talented teacher (who wrote this amazing children’s book) made these drawings of Menachem for the party. Aren’t they so adorable!? My kids and I made a kippah and tzitzit out of cardboard, and after covering kids’ eyes with a bandana, they would pin these on “Menachem.”

And finally, as the guests left, the kids were invited to take these cute tzitzit bags (made by my kids using scissors, glue, a hole puncher and voilà!). We filled each bag with a small aleph beit coloring book (the file of which I saved since my oldest son’s upshernish), a small set of markers, and a small baggie with chocolate Aleph Beit letters like the ones we had on the dessert table).

Have you ever attended an Upshernish? Is this similar to what you experienced? Is having an Upshernish one of your family’s customs?

¿Alguna vez has asistido un Upshernish? SEE THE FEATURE OF MENACHEM’S UPSHERNISH ON GREY LIKES BABY HERE

P.S. Now, if you’re waiting for a ‘Before and After’ picture of Menachem… you’re in good company! Immediately following the party, I jumped into Passover preparations, and never found time to complete his haircut. So, my little boy still has his curls! And since we’re in the time of Sefira (more on that here) when we don’t cut hair until we reach Shavuot… haha I have at least a few more weeks to enjoy his beautiful curls!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
