Wednesday Wink || Guiñada divina

B”H

feature-draft1

Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to another installment of Wednesday Wink – JewishLatinPrincess’ series on Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence). You can find earlier editions of Wednesday Wink in the Soul Talk section of the blog. The purpose of this series is to sensitize us to or create awareness of G-d’s involvement in every detail of our lives (albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation).

Did you ever hear that Sephorim (Holy Jewish/Torah Books) should not be placed upside down!? You’ll be amazed at this Wednesday Wink from from my dear friend and reader of Jewish Latin Princess, Regina. Welcome, Regina!

¡Bienvenida Regina!

This happened to me last year when I was pregnant with my second child, Ruth. During the 35th week of my pregnancy, the doctor told me that the baby had turned around and that now she was with her head up. He said he would give it a couple of weeks in the hopes that the baby would naturally turn head down again. He said that after the 38th week there would not be space for the baby to turn around on her own, and that at that point he would have to intervene.

The doctor specified that in the event that the baby didn’t turn around by the 38th week, I would be hospitalized and he would try to turn the baby around, but there was a chance that the procedure would cause me to go into labor immediately. I was nervous and worried at the thought of the intervention! As any mother, I wanted all to go smoothly and the baby not to be hurt, and to reduce the risk of a c-section, etc.

I kept reminding myself to trust in G-d, but still, I admit I was worried. On top of this, my husband was away in Israel. I had lost many nights of sleep due to not having my husband with me, the aches and pains of the end of pregnancy, and the worry over the baby turning over.

The Rebitzen of my community had called me several times and we played phone tag for a few days. Even though we had both tried, we had not been able to actually speak on the phone. In spite of not feeling well, and being totally exhausted and nervous, I had to go toivel (immerse) something in the dish mikvah. Not in the mood to see anyone, I made sure that I would go in and out, do what I needed to do, and leave.

But, when I arrived at the building, I realized I had left my mikvah access card at home! Oh brother! I dragged myself inside the building to speak with the secretary and request access. When I was speaking with the secretary, I hear a voice that says, “Regina, Hi!”

It was the Rebitzen! I was happy to see her, of course, given that we had missed each other on the phone so many times. However, I was seriously not in a good mood. She immediately perceived that something was up. I told her the whole story, and my worries, almost in tears. She said, “Don’t worry, everything will be fine. Trust in G-d.” Then she told me, “Regina, when you get home, please check that all the siddurim (prayer books) and any other Torah books are in the right position.”

I immediately started going through all the books when I arrived home. To my surprise, I didn’t find one book, two books, three books upside down… I found 25 books upside down! Then I checked all the mezuzot and found one mezuza with the parchment also upside down! How many holy texts turned upside down? A total of 26, H”s name!

After a week with the sephorim now in the correct position I went back to the doctor. When he did the ultrasound, B”H my baby had turned! It was my 38th week. This whole incident was a big wink from above for me! B”H my baby was born perfectly and at the perfect time!

———-

Regina, thank you for the lovely reminder. I often find sephorim in my house that someone mistakenly placed incorrectly, and… I quickly turn them over! :-)

Have a lovely rest of your week!

¡Que pasen una linda semana!

P.S.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
