Wednesday Wink || Giñada divina

feature-draft1

B”H

Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to another installment of Wednesday Wink – JewishLatinPrincess’ series on Hashgacha Pratit (Divine Providence). You can find earlier editions of Wednesday Wink on the Soul Talk section. The purpose of this series is to sensitize us, and make us aware of G-d’s involvement in every detail of our lives (albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation).

Today we have the pleasure of having a guest, and fellow blogger, visiting us to share one those instances in her life in which she felt a “wink from above.” I am happy to introduce you to Lieba from Pondering Jew. Welcome, Lieba!

The woman was sitting on the curb outside the car wash, talking on her cell phone. I couldn’t see her clearly, but my daughter Elkie knew exactly who she was.

“Maya?” I asked as I approached her.

“Maya?” Le pregunte mientras me le acercaba.

“One second,” she said to the person on the phone. She looked up at me, slightly annoyed by the interruption.

“I’m Lieba Rudolph, Billy’s wife,” I announced with a smile. (I call my husband by his Hebrew name, Zev, but many people refer to him by his English name, Billy.)

“I gotta go. I just met someone from my family!” I was relieved she was so excited.

Maya-Rudolph

With Maya’s identity confirmed, Elkie and her daughter Leah appeared. The woman indeed was our famous relative, the actress Maya Rudolph.

Maya’s father is my husband’s first cousin. Their fathers were brothers, who grew up in Pittsburgh.

Of course, none of us could believe the amazing “coincidence” of our meeting. I mean, what’s the likelihood that I would arrive in LA on that exact day in 2013, then go with my daughter to that car wash to get her car cleaned for Pesach, at exactly the time when Maya was there!? (To my knowledge, Maya wasn’t cleaning her car for Pesach, which makes it even more unlikely she would be there at that moment.) And what is the likelihood we would all be at the car wash exactly when, back in Pittsburgh, much of the extended Rudolph family was gathered for the funeral of one of the two original Rudolph sisters?

But, the story of our encounter does not end there… This past summer, we had another Hashgacha Pratis moment connected to Maya.

A successful actress, and born to an African-American mother (the late singer Minnie Riperton), Maya was selected to be profiled on the PBS series, “Finding Your Roots.” I had never heard of the show before Maya’s involvement, but I understand that it’s meant to fascinate audiences with the discoveries found through researching the diverse ancestries of famous people.

It certainly seems like “Finding Your Roots” doesn’t skimp on its research efforts. My husband Zev had numerous conversations with their reseachers – he couldn’t believe their excitement over learning where and when some unknown great, great aunt went to high school.

One Friday afternoon Zev received a stream of emails from the show’s researchers. After months of exploring the Rudolph family, they sent us copies of immigration records, wedding announcements, death certificates–everything they found. They topped it off with an extensive Rudolph family tree!

Up until that point, the Rudolph family tree went as far back as my husband’s grandfather, Julius Rudashevsky. He had been “the patriarch,” who came to America as a stowaway at age eleven. Julius never spoke about the family he left behind in Vilna, to the extent that nobody even knew his parents’ names. That is, until we got those emails…

When my husband and I first saw Julius’s father’s name, we were stunned. We knew that parents have ruach hakodesh (divine inspiration), when naming their children, but it looks like G-d wanted to show us proof.

Here’s the back story:

Este es el trasfondo de la historia:

When our second son was born, we were still giving our children English and Hebrew names. We liked the name Julius for his English name, and appreciated that we were also naming him for his great-grandfather. But, we couldn’t use Julius’s corresponding Hebrew name, Yehuda Avraham, because our older son was already Mordechai Yehuda, and my father, who was still living at the time, was Avraham.

We liked “Dovid” as a middle name, for it was my husband’s maternal grandfather’s name. We wanted a Hebrew first name to go with it- something close to “Julius.” We consulted our rabbi and we all agreed that Yisroel would be something close to Julius that we liked. And that’s how our  second son was named Yisroel Dovid.

We would have continued thinking Yisroel Dovid was an original name if not for Maya’s profile on “Finding Your Roots,” and the researcher’s email showing the updated Rudolph family tree.

The researchers discovered that the name of Julius Rudolph’s father was Yisroel Dovid Rudashevsky. Unbeknownst to us, Yisroel Dovid was already a Rudolph family name, a name that continues through our son, Julius Rudolph.

As a Jew, I strive for a life where G-d is “present” through Hashgacha Pratis (Divine Providence), where I recognize His involvement in everything. Not every encounter is meant to be life-changing, but none is accidental either. And some, like this one, are unusual enough to be seen as a sign of His clear presence, which, ideally, strengthens my ability to recognize Him even more, at times when His presence might not be so obvious. There is definitely always much more going on than I know. However, I am grateful when I get a peek “behind the scenes.” If a family tree falls in my email forest, it’s because I am meant to hear it. And, more importantly, to recognize where it really came from.

Wow, what a story! I also loved Lieba’s explanation of Hashgacha Pratit at the conclusion of her story. Beautiful. Thank you Lieba! If you haven’t met Lieba yet through her blog, I recommend it. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
