B”H

Good morning, everyone! So what do you think of the new look, eh? ;-) Let’s hit the ground running with another episode of Mi casa es Su casa. If you’re new to Jewish Latin Princess, Mi casa es Su casa is an Interior Design series I created to feature beautiful interiors in which the woman of the home features the elements that she has incorporated into her home that make it into a dwelling place for H” – making it into His home.

So, today I have the pleasure of introducing you to two talented ladies from Montreal who have recently started writing the fun blog Jewish Twoish: Sara & Sarah. (How good is that name!? Wait till you see the rest of it!) Although Sara and Sarah are still young and single, they will share with us how they have made both their places into homes that reflect their Jewish identity. I’m delighted to introduce you to Sara & Sarah!

Fantastico, no?

———–

There are many ways people make their houses into Jewish homes. For us, it involves many small touches, sentimental details, and pieces we’ve collected on our travels.  We love mixing old and new items that range from Bubby’s treasures to kitschy jewelry we picked up on Birthright. The following images are from both of our homes and we hope you’ll enjoy them!

One of the best examples of the details in our Jewish homes is this hall table (Sara’s).

I love to mix and match old and new items and this display certainly does that! I picked up this Kabbalah print in Tzfat this summer and it is by David Friedman. The teapot belonged to my grandmother and I love the way it looks next to the Moroccan tea glasses I bought in Tel Aviv. Despite my Ashkenazi background, I’m really attracted to Sephardic culture and love the traditions and food. These tea glasses are hopefully the first of many non-traditional Jewish touches I’ll be adding to my home.

The kitchen is not only a focal part of the home, but it’s a major part of our blog because this is where most of our cooking and baking happens! A huge part of our Jewish identities involves food and recipes that have been passed down for generations. Between the two of us, we have countless Jewish kitchenware that we love to bring out for Holidays and blog posts.

These beautiful blue and white dishes are surprisingly from Costco! We constantly keep an eye out for kitchen items to add to our collection, as we love the festive touch it adds to whatever we’re cooking.

These blazers are very special to me (Sarah) because my Zaide personally designed and made them.

His talent for sewing is owed to my great-grandmother, who upon discovery of a needle on a staircase, decided it was “basheret” for her son to become a tailor. She was certainly right, as this skill allowed my grandfather to work while hiding in Soviet territory during the Holocaust, and helped him come to Canada in 1948, when skilled workers and tailors were being allowed in.

My Zaide also had a very successful fashion career here in Montreal with a brand called Auckie Sanft, which was huge from the 50s-70s. These timeless blazers are a favourite reminder of my Zaide’s talent, and of my great-grandmother’s foresight.

I’ve been haunted by the Holocaust for as long as I (Sarah) can remember. My Zaide is the sole survivor of his entire family, who were murdered in the Kielce Ghetto and Treblinka death camp. Several of my Bubby’s relatives including her brother, sister-in-law, and niece were slaughtered in the killing fields outside of Odessa.

While I have been taught about the immense heartbreak and unspeakable pain of the Shoah, my grandparents constantly share beautiful stories of their pasts, making their friends and towns seem very much alive to me. Inspired by the narratives of my grandparents, my obsession with Holocaust literature began early on. I’m slowly growing my collection of books, including literature about the Armenian Genocide. In my opinion, retelling and sharing stories from the Holocaust can be a powerful tool in the prevention of future genocides.

Books2_1024

I keep my books next to a picture of my Zaide in his hometown, Kielce, Poland. It makes me feel closer to the family I was never able to meet and reminds me of the importance remembering what they, and their neighbours and friends endured.

The central focus of the living room is definitely the fireplace. For that reason, some of the most precious things are placed on the mantelpiece.

Namely, my paternal grandfather’s war medals, family photos, tchatkes from Russia, and a small painting from Israel.

LivingRoom2_1024

These items are a reminder of our blended identities living here in Canada and the diverse backgrounds so many of us come from.  Our Judaism is definitely in the details here!

No trip to Israel is complete without a trip to the shuk to pick up some jewelry! These are some of the pieces we’ve picked up on past trips to Israel and we find ourselves reaching for them time and time again. They are a really fun way for us to demonstrate our Jewish identity on a daily basis. Our favourite is probably the snowflake Jewish star we got last August at Dave + Esty.

We purchased this mezuzah on Birthright in August at the Bauhaus Museum in Tel Aviv. We love its simplicity and neatness. This mezuzah is representative of what we’d like our homes to eventually be – modern, Jewish and timeless!

And I think you guys are on the right track to create this for yourselves!

It’s so wonderful that these two young ladies are already building up the treasures they will carry with them as they build their homes as Jewish wives one day, G-d willing. Sara & Sarah reminded me that just as so much of Judaism is in the details, how we reflect our Judaism at home is also very much in the sentimental details that we take the time to incorporate; and which connect us to our Jewish ancestry and our Jewish experience.

And did you see those cute kitchen mittens!? They DIY’ed them! Hello, can you sell them, my friends!?

¿¡Y vieron esos lindos guantes de cocina!? Los hicieron ellas mismas (¡DIY!) ¡Chicas, a comercializarlos! :-)

Thank you Sara & Sarah, I look forward to more from you in your beautiful blog and in life!

¡Gracias Sara y Sarah.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
