I hope you all had a meaningful Yom Kippur and are recharged to take on the new year with joy and gladness of heart. In fact, joy is exactly what the upcoming holiday of Sukkot is all about. Before we leave the comforts of our home, and go outdoors while enjoying our family and friends in our temporary dwellings- our Sukkot- I wanted to share with you a new and truly inspiring  installment of Mi casa es SU casa, JewishLatinPrincess’ series on the Jewish home. If you missed the previous Mi casa es SU casa, you can find it here.

I “met” Julie from Florence & Isabelle, a few months ago through the blogging world and right away I knew she needed to be part of this series. She named her Jewish life style blog Florence & Isabelle in honor of her two Jewish grandmothers! How lovely is that!?

¿Precioso, no?

Julie will show us how she has “infused Judaism” throughout her home. I think she has done a beautiful job. I’ll let you see for yourselves! Welcome, Julie!

¡Bienvenida, Julie!

I love celebrating our Judaism through books, art, and Judaica. Our bookcases hold many Jewish books and our shofar.

Me encanta celebrar nuestro judaísmo a través de libros, arte y judaíca. Nuestros libreros contienen muchos libros judíos, junto con nuestro shofar.

Our collection of tzedakah boxes sits on the bottom shelf of our bookshelf along with a beautiful glass dreidel we received as a gift from dear friends. The brick on the second shelf is from The Contemporary Jewish Museum here in San Francisco. Our museum is still relatively new and this brick came from the old power station which the museum took over and is now housed in. A beautiful modern building sits attached to the old but now renovated power station — all designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind. It’s a beautiful museum inside and out!

drawings

My father was an artist and a lot of his art dealt with aspects of Judaism. This drawing is from a series of 6 about his childhood in the Bronx and this particular drawing depicts the day he became a Bar Mitzvah.

 father

This was a painting my father did in the 1970’s. He used to work in advertising. I love this painting- it reminds me of the show “Mad Men”. The sculpture below it is by the artist Tor Archer. The Contemporary Jewish Museum presents a terrific show every two years called the Dorothy Saxe Invitational, whereby artists are asked to interpret a Jewish ritual object. This piece is from the Passover Seder Plate exhibit. The works are for sale and that year we bought two! I love Tor’s piece – it’s called “A Natural Seder.”

matza-holder

This is another piece from The Contemporary Jewish Museum Dorothy Saxe Invitational. This is by the artist Lynne Avadenka and is called “World Book.” A cardboard globe, she handpainted the hagaddah on the outside and inside a representational seder plate and matzah holder.

cookbooks

I have a huge collection of Jewish cookbooks. Here’s just two of the shelves but you can see I collect all kinds of Jewish cookbooks from the new and trendy like “Jerusalem” to the old (where I usually go searching at used bookshops) like “The Great Hadassah Cookbook.”

Although I love cooking, we’ve gotten pretty casual over the years over here when it comes to our weekly Shabbat dinner. I used to fuss so much and then learned that simple is best.

set-for-shabbat-3

A simple arugula salad, roast potatoes and/or some kind of roast veggies and a protein. I do a buffet and have guests set the table or even just help themselves. Wine is poured. Someone brings a few desserts. Everyone is happy.

Alguien trae unos postres. Todos quedan felices. :-)

set-shabbat-with-torah-in-background

It’s nice too that I’m out of the kitchen more now — I do more pre-planning and more pre-cooking and less fussing and I can enjoy our guests more! I have found too that over the years friends like to bring things and they enjoy helping out. That way, we are all a part of it-welcoming Shabbat together.

challah-cover-2

I love our challah plate. It was a wedding gift from dear friends when my husband and I got married 17 years ago!

challah

challah-coverThe challah cover, while not fancy and somewhat dirty, is beloved because my sister’s oldest daughter made it in pre-school about 20 years ago. My sister lives across the country and we are close, so there’s a part of her with us on Shabbat.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

What a treat to hear Yael speak at the Jewish Women's Retreat in San Antonio. Her presentation, "Mi Casa es Su Casa, The Kabbalah of the Home" inspired me to express my Judaism in a way that speaks to my creative side and love of all things chic without compromising my true self and style. I'm so glad I got the chance to hear her message of creativity and Torah. Bravo!

Your vivacious speaking style, the clarity with which you made your points, and your warmth toward your audience made this one of the best breakout sessions I attended.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

  • Kayla WarrenKayla Warren

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.

Yael helped me style my son's upshernish as well as my living room. She is wonderful to work with! She is talented and extremely organized which is super helpful! She has an incredible eye and knows how to beautify absolutely anything!
