B”H

Shavua Tov, my friends! I’m launching the week with a post that I have been excited for a while to get out to you. This Mi casa es Su casa is so so good. And the ladies that put it together, Daniela & Gaby Apeloig are just amazing! As I’ve told you before, one of the most rewarding things about blogging has been the like minded, creative, beautiful, and inspiring women that I’ve met along the way. From the minute I saw Daniela & Gaby’s work, through their company Apeloig Collection, I knew I had to connect with them. Well you know that wasn’t too hard, as it turns out that we have multiple friends in common! I’m so proud and happy for their accomplishments and what they’re offering the Jewish world. And, today, I’m excited to show you a peek into these talented sisters’ home life and how they have made their homes into ones where H” is welcome and feels at home. Here’s Dani & Gaby’s Mi casa es Su casa…

¡Shavua Tov, amigas!

Daniela’s House Tour:

When Yael asked us how G-d is present in our homes and charged us with the task of showing you the Jewish elements of our homes, I immediately thought it was a hard endeavor. My first inclination was to think “Oh, well I have Judaica,” but when I started to take a closer look, I realized that indeed my Judaism is present in each corner of my home in different ways – from the very entrance of my home, with my mezuzah which reminds me of my Judaism every time I walk through my door, to other details that I hadn’t even thought about.

I have a special corner in my kid’s playroom where I display my favorite projects made by my daughter Camille. Camille goes to a Jewish school and I love that she gets to learn all the stories from our Torah, Jewish Holidays and Jewish values. It’s very important for me that she gets a Jewish education from early on, and thus inculcated in our values, history and tradition. I love hearing her say the berachot (blessing) and sing Jewish songs! In the picture above you can see my favorite projects, from this past school year – in which she learned about TuB’Shvat, Pesach, Shabbat Chanukah, and more…

Jewish-Latin-Princess--Dani-Apeloig-Cuadro-El-Moises
“El Moisés” (according to the Apeloig family) by Pedro Sandoval

Our mother is an artist and thus, we grew up in a home surrounded by art, visiting museums and an overall focus, interest and education in art. Recently, my parents sent over to Miami several of their art work from their home in Caracas, Venezuela – the home in which my sisters  and I grew up- in order to gift them to us. Among the paintings that I chose when we split the artwork, is this painting from a Venezuelan artist, Pedro Sandoval. We actually don’t know the name of this painting, but our family always referred to it as “El Moises” (The Moses) because it looks to us like an image of Moshe Rabeinu (Moses) receiving the Luchot (Tablets). What’s interesting to me is that an artist creates his work and the audience interprets it according to their own framework. Our family, given that we are Jewish, always interpreted this work as such, even if depicting Moshe Rabeinu was not the artist’s original intention when creating it. :-)

I have a hamsa pin with a little eye that was gifted to me, in my baby’s room – you know, supposed to protect the baby from the ayin hora :-). I added a gold pendant with one of G-d’s names, which my husband’s grandfather gifted me. It’s a simple detail in my baby’s room, but to me it’s very meaningful and powerful.

Painting by Yaacov Agam gifted to Daniela and her husband by his parents.

The painting above our piano is from Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, best known for his kinetic artwork – among which is the fountain on the Dizengoff Plaza in Tel Aviv, as well as the facade of the Dan Panorama Hotel in Tel Aviv’s Tayelet. It was a gift from my inlaws. My parents and my inlaws have been friends since childhood and by “coincidence” their children ended up married. When we got married my in laws gifted us this painting because they had bought it in the 1980’s on a trip that they made to Israel with my parents! It reminded my inlaws of a time the four of them were together and wanted us to have it. We were more than elated to receive it!

Jewish-Latin-Princess-500-Judaica

On our living room’s coffee table I have a book that I love titled “500 Judaica – Innovative Contemporary Ritual Art.” I bought it in Israel when we began to do research in order to launch our company Apeloig Collection. The book has a some history on Judaica and a photographic compilation of 500 Judaica pieces from different artists, including menorahs, tzedakah boxes, mezuzot, ketuvot, and others. Commenting on the one thing that all the pieces have in common, the author states, “It is the ongoing faith that creativity and ritual go hand in hand… to keep Judaism a living an ever-evolving tradition.” From time to time I go through the book again and inevitably get inspiration for the design of our products.

Jewish-Latin-Princess-GabyApeloig-Holocaust-Survivor

I absolutely love to host community events in my home. My home is always open to any program of interest to our Jewish community – Jewish federation events, Torah Shiurim (Torah Classes), programs about Israel etc. Most recently I hosted an event in which a 92 year old Holocaust survivor came to our home as part of a program called “Memories in the Living Room.” This program takes place every year during the week of Yom HaShoa. This year we had 10 homes in the area which hosted different Hollocaust survivors in an informal living room setting, so that the guests could hear their stories and learn from them in comfort and full detail. I had around forty people in my home for a night that was incredibly inspiring as this gentleman told us his story. Albeit very hard to hear, he managed to communicate his story in a very enlightening way, always shedding light on the positive side of things, emphasizing a message of love and of living life to the fullest.

Jewish-Latin-Princess-Gaby-Apeloig-Jewish-Cookbooks-2

JewishLatinPrincess-GabyApeloig-colleccionlibroscocina

I love to cook! I do not cook daily, but I love to prepare menus and try different recipes from time to time. I like creating thematic menus for Shabbat or Holidays. Thus, I incorporated my favorite cookbooks in my kitchen’s decor.

Jewish-Latin-Princess-Gaby-Apeloig-libros-cocina3All of them have a Jewish theme and/or kosher recipes. In fact, some are books of recipes compiled in different Latin American Jewish communities, such as Wizo in Panama, Costa Rica, Venezuela and Miami. I love these type of books because each recipe within them has the full name of the author and I happen to know many of the people who shared their recipes. I love how the tastes of our Jewish traditions gets passed on generation after generation! This is the beauty of these books – there’s classic recipes from my grandparent’s friends, up until more contemporary and even practical recipes for today’s fast paced lifestyle. I also own a book that compiles the recipes from the Jewish community in Venezuela (it was made as a fundraiser for the 60th anniversary of the Hebraica school, the community’s Jewish school). All of these always inspire me and help me prepare dishes for my family and/or when I make gathering or celebration for friends and family.

Gabriela’s Stunning Shabbat Table – more details here.

One of my passions is to set and style the dining table. I am obsessed with table linens of all sorts.

jewish-latin-princess-gaby-apeloig-closet-detailsI have this closet in which I store all of my table linens, in addition to extra Judaica that we use around the house throughout the year such as kippot, challah covers, menorot, Shabbat candelabra etc.

Jewish-Latin-Princess-Gaby-Apeloig-Storage-Closet

I also have a Blessing on the Home, that was gifted to us. I love opening the closet and seeing the blessing there reminding me of my roots and that in here I have things that I use to reflect that.

In our Living Room, I’ve displayed several books that show our Jewish roots and traditions. Among them, I have a book on Israel’s history that is an excellent read, with beautiful photography and just a pleasure to glance.

Picture of Andres Apeloig z”l celebrating his 70th birthday with his family; from his book about his experience during WWII

Among them I have the book my grandfather, Andrés Apeloig z’l wrote about his story during WWII (we named our company, Apeloig Collection to honor him!). In his book, “The War that I had to Live” he tells his story having left home at 15 and becoming an orphan at an early age. I also have many books throughout the house related to Judaism and the State of Israel. Aside from the practical reasons, I also think that it’s important for my children to see these around the house and have their Judaism at the forefront.

We’re subscribed to a beautiful program called PJ Library. The PJ Library sends a book per month to each child of the family! I have dozens of great children’s books with Jewish themes, which my kids enjoy reading, thanks to this program. There’s all sorts of themes- stories from the Torah, stories on values, folktales, Holidays etc. I highly recommend you subscribe to it, if it’s available in your city.

JewishLatinPrincess-Gaby-Apeloig-Taly's-Room

JewishLatinPrincess-GabyApeloig-Alans-Room

I have the most modern and beautiful mezuzot in all the doorposts of my home – Of course, Apeloig Collection’s mezuzot! I matched an Apeloig Collection mezuzah case to each of my kids’ rooms decor: red, blue and turquoise. Beautiful cases, right? What are you waiting to go order yours!? :-)

Bellas, ¿no? ¿¡Que esperan para ordenar una!? :-)

_______

Incredible, right!? Gabriela’s and Daniela’s stories are so meaningful and it’s a pleasure to see all the details in their homes. I think I better plan a trip to Miami soon to go chat with them. We could probably spend hours catching up and who knows how many great ideas we could come up with together haha! In the mean time, I’m already counting how many Apeloig Collection mezuza cases I’ll be ordering for my home!

¿¡Entonces!? Genial, ¿cierto?

What’s your favorite part? The mezuzot, the art, the stories?

¿Cuál es tu parte favorita? Las mezuzot, el arte, las anecdotas?

I wish you all a great week!

Les deseo a todas una lindisima semana!

Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
