Measure for Measure || Medida por Medida

B”H

Today I will continue Part II of the story that led to the DIY Backdrop Wall for this stunning styled wedding shoot.

table-shot

Less than a year after taking my advice, the young college student had become a highly sought-after professional photographer!

warm-close-up

Some three years later, I came to her with an exciting idea that I had for a blog. I had chosen the name, a niche market, colors for the logo, and had written down over two pages of content ideas!  But, I kept second guessing myself, feeling daunted by the task of bringing JewishLatinPrincess to life ;-)

listening

My friend listened, and listened some more (she’s good at that; I’m better at the talking, I think). She laughed at my split personality, and finally said: “Yael, DO IT!”

So I went home all excited thinking I’m for sure doing this!  Except, instead, I just filed the idea on my desk under a pile of other stuff called life, and nothing happened.

Until, about three months ago, she calls me to help her style the wedding shoot:

“And it can be on your blog,” she says.
“Ahm, Sheva, I still don’t have a blog, you know,” I sheepishly admit.
“I know.” (Silence… )  “Well, what are you waiting for? You should!” she exclaims.

She doesn’t let me off the hook:
“So, you’ll do it?”
“Sheva, when is this shoot?” (It was two days before Sukkot and the shoot was something
like two days after Sukkot!) “Are you nuts!?” Mrs. Practicality (aka Yael) says.
“I know, but this vendor and that vendor and the other can’t later, and so that’s the only
date,” she replies.
(Panicky smile on my face) “Ok, I’ll do it!”

No me dejó escaparme:

painting-away
As I was painting away… two hours before the shoot, mind you, she says smiling:
“So what about the blog?”
I just laughed.

                   Yo me reí.

The morning after the photo shoot, she texts me the contact of a graphic designer that could help me with the blog’s logo. And a week later, I posted my first blog post, which you can read here.

Our sages teach us that G-d judges our actions midda k’neged midda (measure for measure). This means that whatever we do in this world, H” re-pays us back in the same measure.  It’s funny I’m referring to this now because on Monday you’ll hear about this on this blog, but from someone other than me. ;-)

We don’t do a good act or perform a mitzvah with the expectation of repayment. But, we have to have this awareness because everything is judged by H” in that way, both the good and the not so good.  And yes, often we do not see the “repayment.” Other times, however, we are awarded the opportunity to see it.

menachem-and-me

Had I planned on having a blog and loving it and being able to affect so many people in a positive way through this media, when I gave honest advice and encouragement to another woman? Of course not!? Is she the only reason or the only propeller to me having created the blog? Of course not! (Just as I am not the only reason or propeller to her having become a photographer.)

ES-in-cotton-field

We were both messengers, with an opportunity to instill a positive message in a person’s life. The opportunity was given to us. We took it. We could have chosen differently. There were other “messengers” in both our lives, surely.

As receivers, we were also receptive. We listened and we had trust. Trust in something higher than our friend, and in fact, trust in something much higher than ourselves. Trust that the voices we were hearing from friends, as well as from within, were messages from above.

How many times do we really listen — to those giving us advice, to our own internal feelings and inner voice? How many times do we actually take action, take a leap of faith and trust that if G-d has presented an opportunity, it means that He fully trusts that we can do it. Just do it and let Him take care of the rest, give it your best and trust!

¡Ponerle nuestro mejor esfuerzo y confiar!

Untitled-1

Part of our challenge is to be able to connect the dots, to keep our minds open and receptive to the messages, recognizing that they are blessings and miracles directed specifically to us from G-d. If and when we are able to recognize this, then we are humbled by H”‘s kindness and greatness.

Did you ever feel like you were getting a message from above? Were you ever able to see the principle of “measure for measure” occurring in your life?

¿Pudistes alguna vez ver el principio de “medida por medida” ocurrir en tu vida?I have an exciting post for you on Monday. Until then, Shabbat Shalom!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
