B”H

This time of year the whole world seems to be distracted by the allure of gift giving – to oneself or to others. The blogsphere is saturated with gift guides for everyone and anyone you know… (him, her, the fashionista, the design enthusiast, the kids, and so on…) Being bombarded by so many gift guides got me thinking about the gifts that we have and how we relate to them.

We all have blessings beyond belief, each a beautiful gift from our Father in Heaven – He who is “rav chesed” (exceedingly kind). There are gifts packaged in beautiful packages. The packaging is so pretty that there’s no way we don’t recognize them as gifts. It’s obvious. We can see them, we can appreciate them, we love those gifts! We want more of those! (Now, there’s material for a blogger’s gift guide with substance!)
;-)

Then there are gifts that don’t come with such nice packaging. In fact, they look gross! And we don’t want them!

The older I get, the more I realize that we all have them, and we always have them. Sometimes the package is bigger, sometimes smaller, uglier, less offensive; but, those gifts are always around. I’m talking about good old CHALLENGES. Raise your hand if you’ve ever faced one. Yeah, I thought so.

The thing about these gifts is that they are so custom made that you can’t even return them! In fact, not only are they custom made, they probably have your monogram! There’s no returning it. Forget it. Super annoying.

Super frustrante.

Yet, when we stop and think with empathy at the challenges (a.k.a gifts in not so great packaging) that others have, ours don’t seem as gross and ugly. In fact, most of the time, we’d probably come to the conclusion that we’d take our awfully-packaged gift over anyone else’s. Oh, no, let’s say that again… that we’d HAPPILY take our awfully packaged gift over anyone else’s.

It’s interesting that the Hebrew word for challenge, nisayon, contains in it the word nes. Nes is miracle, and also a banner. In fact, usually we undertand the meaning of Nes, as in miracle, to be a banner that announces that H” is overtly there. In this case, we can learn that within the nisayon (challenge) there is a nes – a banner – announcing to us of a potential that we may have not even known we had.

We all know that after going through a challenging situation, we changed. We became a different person. We grew. We discovered potential and ability to cope and handle life that we never knew we had within us. Could G-d have chosen a different way for us to grow and discover our potential?

My friends, I have no idea why G-d operates the way He does, and I do not claim to know the ways of G-d at all. But, I do know one thing, that He has ways (whether we understand them or not; and, of course, whether we like them or not). And His ways are manifested in our lives much like gifts coming down from the sky with a parachute – ok fine, sometimes it feels like the gift fell down like a grenade! I hear ya.

¡Entiendo!

So, what’s my point? It’s time to go add some ribbon! As they say in Yiddish, “We all have a peckl.” (We all have a package.) The other day, I concluded, “That’s it! I’m taking mine and you know what? I’m wrapping it in PINK ribbon!” (I like pink – it makes me happy) May I suggest you all go and do the same?

Let’s go wrap our challenges in pretty ribbon – choose your color- and learn to live happily with them. Because gifts will keep coming throughout our lives, and I say, if they ain’t coming in pretty packaging, who said you can’t change that?

If you’ll excuse me, I have some colored ribbon to choose…

Have a lovely and smiley week!

¡Que tengan una feliz y linda semana!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
