B”H

I recently came across two photographic portraits of Jewish life that I thought I’d share with you. Both female photographers, related to Jews and curious about Jewish way of life, set out to learn more through their cameras’ lenses. At the end of their studies they both expressed a great deal of warmth and positivity towards what they encountered.

Japanese photographer, Chie Nishio, captured the daily life of Chasidim in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Italian Federica Valabrega set out to study the life of Jewish women in different religiously observant communities and published a book titled Daughters of the King. Sound familiar? Go to the FAQ’s on JLP, to see why. ;-)

;-)Chie Nishio’s work The Hasidim of Crown, Heights, Brooklyn: A Community Study is currently at The Brooklyn Public Library.

Las serie de Chie Nishio Los Jasídicos de Crown Heights, Brooklyn: Un estudio comunitario está en exhibisión en La Biblioteca Pública de Brooklyn.copyright_Chie-Nishio_2.jpg.CROP.original-originalAside from what looks like wonderful photography, I was intrigued by the story behind the series of 200 pictures that Chie Nishio took over two years, as an outsider who was warmly welcomed by the Chassidic community. You can read more about it here and here.

Aren’t the details on the baby’s pidyion haben (redemption of the first born) beautiful? I have a thing for this beautiful ceremony, so this picture caught my attention right away.

A mi me encanta la ceremonia del pidyion, así que esta foto me llamo la atención de inmediato.copyright_Chie-Nishio_1.jpg.CROP.original-originalcopyright_ChieNishio_6.jpg.CROP.original-originalA few of my female Latin friends mentioned that they found the exhibit fascinating and totally worthwhile, so I wanted to share it with the rest of you. It’s only going to be there until February 1st, so if you’re in New York or planning a visit soon, it seems like this should be on your list of things to do.Varias de mis amigas latinas me mencionaron que disfrutaron mucho de la exhibición, así que les quería dejar saber.

Federica Valabrega’s work below is strikingly beautiful. You can read more about her and her work here and here. Her use of light to create the stark contrast between black and white is fabulous and quite intentional as you can read here.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
