Hi everyone! I hope you’re all having a meaningful and beautiful Chanukah! Last time, I spoke about olive oil on a physical level- sharing with you a neat cookie recipe using olive oil and a beautiful way to package it. Today, I wanted to dig deeper on this concept of olive oil. Why do we celebrate the miracle of oil, specifically? What is the significance of the oil?
¡Hola a todas! Espero que estén pasando un a fiesta de Jánuca bella y significativa. La ultima vez, les conté sobre el aceite de oliva de una manera “física”- mostrándoles una divertida de galletas utilizando el aceite de oliva y una linda forma de empacarlas. Hoy quiero indagar un poco mas en el significado espiritual del aceite de oliva. ¿Por que el celebramos el milagro del aceite? ¿Qué significado tiene el aceite? If we were to look into the story of Chanukah and ask ourselves, what was the bigger miracle: 1- that a tiny army of Torah scholars and simple Jews defeated the entire army of the great Syrian-Greek Empire; or 2- that a little flask of pure olive oil kept the menorah burning for eight days; we would easily conclude that the Maccabees’s victory is by far the “bigger” miracle. However, even as we remember and re-tell the story of the Maccabees’ miraculous victory every year, the miracle that we celebrate through lighting the menorah, is the miracle of the oil. In fact, as I told you here, the best way to beautify the mitzvah of lighting the menorah, is to use olive oil. So why do we focus on this “smaller” miracle, rather than the “bigger” more obvious miracle?
Si pensamos en la historia de Jánuca y nos preguntamos, ¿cuál es el milagro mas grande? ¿1- Que una pequeña banda de estudiosos de Torá y judíos simples, derrotaran a todo el ejercito del Imperio Sirio-Griego; o 2-que un pequeño jarro de aceite de oliva puro mantuviera la menorah del Templo encendida por ocho días? Fácilmente concluimos que la victoria Macabéa, es sin duda el milagro mas grande de los dos. Mas sin embargo, aún cuando recordamos y contamos la historia de los Macabéos y su milagrosa victoria todos los años, el milagro que celebramos es el del aceite, prendiendo la menorá. De hecho, como les conté aquí, la mejor manera de encender la menorá es justamente con aceite de oliva. Entonces, ¿por qué nos enfocamos en el milagro “pequeño”, en vez de en el milagro mas “grande” y mas obvio?
To understand why we celebrate this miracle, we must understand the nature of the battle, and it’s uniqueness from other challenges the Jewish nation has faced. The battle with the Syrian-Greek empire was not a physical battle, but rather a spiritual one. The Syrian-Greeks did not want to annihilate us as a people. They didn’t mind us at all. They appreciated what we have- a Torah!
Para entender por que celebramos éste milagro, tenemos que primero entender la naturaleza de la batalla con el imperio Sirio-Griego y su diferencia a otros retos que el pueblo judío ha enfrentado. La batalla con este imperio no era una física, sino una espiritual. Es decir, los griegos no quería exterminar nuestro pueblo. No les molestaba nuestra existencia per se. En realidad apreciaban mucho de lo que teníamos y contribuíamos- en efecto ¡una Torá!Here’s how they saw the situation with the Jews, “Torah, as a book of history, as a great code of moral conduct, as a celebration of historical events and of universal values, yes, please we’ll take it, we like it!” “Now hold on, guys, you take this Torah way to far… accepting it like crazies when so much of it defies reason.” This was the antithesis of Syrian-Greek belief system. What the Syrian-Greeks did mind, and very much so, was that the Jews practiced their faith with an irrational level of commitment and love. We are committed to Judaism and G-d when it makes sense to our human minds, as well as when it makes absolutely no rational sense.
Así es como veían la situación con los judíos, “Torá, como un libro de historia, como un gran código de conducta ética y moral, como una celebración de eventos históricos y valores universales, sí, claro que sí… ¡nos gusta! Pero ya va, ustedes agarran esta Torá y toman todo muy serio… la aceptan como una locos, ciegamente, cuando tanto de ella defía el uso de razón.” Esta manera de pensar y comportarse era la antítesis del credo de este imperio. Lo que le molestaba a los griegos, y les molestaba mucho, era que los judíos tomaban su fe con un nivel irracional de compromiso y amor. No podían soportar que estamos comprometidos al judaísmo y a Di-s, tanto cuando hace sentido intelectual, así como cuando no hace sentido alguno.The fact that we accept the Torah, not just as wisdom, but as divine wisdom, and thus beyond any human comprehension- that level of irrational, “crazy” if you will, commitment – irked the Syrian-Greeks (intellectuals par excellence) to the core.
El hecho de que aceptamos la Torá no sólo como sabiduría, sino como sabiduría divina, y por ende mas allá de comprensión intelectual- ese nivel de compromiso irracional, “loco” – era el que le molestaba a los griegos (intelectuales par excellence) .Thus, their battle was against our supra-rational commitment to G-d, deliberately breaking the seal of the High Priest on each flask of oil, making a mockery of our concept of tuma and tahara (purity and impurity), spiritual concepts that have no explanation in the physical realm. Physically, flasks of oil, either with or without its “holy” seal, are exactly the same! Spiritually, however, they are quite the opposite!
Por lo tanto, la batalla era en contra de nuestro compromiso supra-racional a Di-s. Y por eso deliberadamente rompieron el sello del Cohen Gadol en cada frasquito de aceite, burlándose del concepto de tumá y tahará (pureza e impureza)- conceptos puramente espirituales, los cuales no tienen ninguna explicación física. ¡Claramente, en el plano físico, los jarros de aceite, con el sello del Cohen o sin este, son exactamente los mismos! Sin embargo, espiritualmente, estos jarros son ¡completamente opuestos!Oil’s unique property is that when mixed with other liquids, it rises to the top. Oil is noted in Kabbalistic thought as a liquid that represents transcendence from physicality- holiness. Therefore, Kabbalah explains oil as the aspect of a Jew’s soul that relates to G-d in a way that transcends all intellect. The oil represents the part of our soul that is so deeply connected to its Creator that its love and commitment for Him is beyond any reasoning or use of intellect. And thus, the Greeks went systematically after the oil- which represents our intimate, supra-rational connection to G-d, which they couldn’t comprehend and sought to end.Todas sabemos que el aceite tiene una cualidad única que es que no se mezcla con otros líquidos, y que al intentar hacerlo, el aceite sube hacia arriba y se mantiene separado. La Kabalá, por ende, dice que es un líquido que representa trascendencia del ámbito físico- santidad. Explica que el aceite es el aspecto del alma judía que esta relacionada con Di-s de una manera que trasciende todo intelecto. El aceite representa la parte de nuestra alma que está tan íntimamente conectada con su Creador que su amor y compromiso a El, va mucho mas allá de cualquier uso de razón, o ejercicio intelectual. Y por lo tanto, los griegos fueron deliberada y sistemáticamente atacando el aceite- representativo de nuestra relación con Di-s íntima y supra-racional; una conexión que no podían comprender ni soportar. Fortunately, the oil of our souls burns bright with an Infinite light, just as its Creator to whom it is completely bound. And therefore, it has the unfathomable capacity not just to dispel darkness, but actually to transform darkness into light. May we see it with our own eyes in our days.Afortunadamente, el aceite puede salir arriba y brillar una luz Infinita, como la de su Creador, y por lo tanto, tiene la capacidad incomprensible de no sólo empujar la oscuridad, sino de realmente transformarla en luz.
