Hannukah Chocolate Cookie || Galletas de chocolate de Jánuca

December 19, 2014 by Yael 1 Comment

Hannukah Chocolate Cookie made with olive oil

B”H

Happy third day of Hannukah! Today, I want to share with you such a fun and tasty Hannukah treat. It’s a Hannukah Chocolate Chip Cookie! What makes it a special Hannukah cookie? It’s made with olive oil! How perfect, right!?

I read about these cookies a while back in my friend Albertina’s blog. They are called Olive Oil, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cookies. Quite intrigued by the idea of an olive oil cookie that seemed to be delicious, I stored the idea in my memory files. A few weeks ago as I was mentally getting ready for Chanukah, I remembered the olive oil cookies. We are specifically celebrating the miracle of the flask of olive oil- enough to keep the menorah lit for one day; yet miraculously kept it lit for eight days (the amount of time it would take to get new supply of tahor or pure olive oil). Plus, what’s a holiday without chocolate anyways, so I decided to bake them. And I’m glad I did!

I discovered the chunkiest, yummiest chocolate chip cookies ever and they are healthy too! So, I decided to expand this yummy discovery into a perfect little homemade Chanukah gift for my children’s wonderful teachers.

I started thinking how to package this and kept wondering if there could be a way I could find an affordable little flask in which I could put olive oil and package it together with the cookies. Well, Hobby Lobby came to the rescue. As I was walking through the aisles I found the little flasks! Cute, little flasks, with a cork… and 50% off!

sale-oil-jug

After, the what now would be the perfect little jugs of oil, for .99 cents, I kept moving along and found the brown boxes, perfect to fit cookies and said jugs. I had found burlap ribbon and the cute chalk gift tags at the Dollar Store, and had some left over tissue paper from this project.

I love how this turned out. I think you could go many directions with it. I initially wanted to make a little poem that would connect/explain the idea of the cookies and the flask of oil, but my poetry skills left much to be desired and I was running short on time, so I didn’t include a poem. I just used the gold colored tags to write the name of the cookie recipe and the silver one to write Happy Chanukah. I think including the recipe inside the box is also a nice idea (or better yet, put a note that says: “Find recipe at www.jewishlatinprincess.com” ;-)).

The Chanukah Chocolate Cookie
(from Mimosa Lane Blog)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup olive oil
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup natural cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt (plus more for sprinkling. I used Kosher Salt but you can use coarse sea salt or black salt)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp hot water
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. With a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment mix the olive oil and sugar. Mix well until combined. Add the eggs, one at a time. Mix well. Add the cocoa powder, flour and salt. Mix until a dough forms that looks like thick brownie batter.

In a separate small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the hot water. Add this dissolved baking soda into the bowl with the dough. Then add the vanilla extract as well. Mix everything until well combined.

Stir in the chocolate chips with a spatula. Refrigerate the batter for at least 30 minutes or even overnight.

Scoop out the dough with a table spoon and place in the parchment lined baking sheets. Sprinkle with Kosher salt before putting in the oven. Bake for 10-20  minutes, or until the edges are set. Let cool completely on the baking sheets and then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.

Yael helped me style my son's upshernish as well as my living room. She is wonderful to work with! She is talented and extremely organized which is super helpful! She has an incredible eye and knows how to beautify absolutely anything!
