Not Just a Latin Fire|| No sólo un fuego latino

B”H

Did you ever wonder, why the Jewish fascination with fire? Fire is very much present in our lives as Jewish women. Each week we welcome in and escort out the Day of Rest with fire. We do the same each Holiday. Many light candles during weddings and during Brit Milas. We also light a candle during the days of Shiva and on the yortzeit of our beloved who passed. And of course, in a few days, on Chanukah, we will again celebrate with eight days of fiery flames.

Our Sages divide the physical world into four elements (air, earth, water and fire). Of these four, fire, albeit physical, has a uniquely spiritual quality. On a physical level, if I use or consume something, that thing diminishes, is reduced, is lessened. However, when I “use” something of a spiritual nature, that “something” does not decrease, but rather increases. When I love, I can love more; when I learn, I gain wisdom; when I show empathy towards one, I am able to show more empathy for others, etc. We see a similar thing with fire. If I take a flame from of another flame, the original flame does not diminish. On the contrary, both flames together now create even more light than the original flame.  This is a very spiritual quality. It is precisely that quality, present in our spiritual dimensions, that the lights of Chanukah teach us.

Our souls are compared to fire. Just as fire always reaches upwards, our souls always yearn towards G-d- the initial Flame from which our souls originate. Just like fire, our souls do not diminish. The more we ignite them, the more we “use” them, the more they shine. Just like fire, our souls provide warmth, inspiration, light…

Al igual que el fuego, el alma calienta, inspira, ilumina…As women, we are the ones who carry the flame of the home – the Jewish essence.

Chanukah is linked to Jewish women, who have always struggled to maintain the fire of our faith, illuminating and warming our homes, and by extension, the world around us.

Where do we light Chanukah lights? In the window or doorway (opposite the mezuzah) of our homes, to remind us that the best way to illuminate the darkness, is from within – from the fire within us, within our families, within our homes. And from there, our light extends into the outside world.

How do we light Chanukah lights? We increase the number of lights each day. This reminds us that we illuminate our homes through the increase and intensification of mitzvot throughout our daily lives.

And thus, we irradiate our light towards the external world, allowing our light to illuminate and ignite other lights and together, collectively we light up the entire world, revealing the true beauty within it.

So yes, we may have a little bit of a “Latin fire,” but don’t let that fool anyone, because really we have a big, great Jewish fire, that when put to use can illuminate an entire world.

Shabbat Shalom and a Happy Chanukah!

¡Shabbat Shalom y Féliz Janucá!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
