Table Setting Surprise || Una mesa sorprendente

Shavua Tov, my friends! How is everybody doing? Are you feeling the busyness of this time of year as much as I am? I’m holding on to my dear calendar/agenda because it’s getting pretty busy around here, and I must keep sane. So let me tell you about my new surprising discovery, which will be another tool to keep my sanity.

¡Shavua Tov, amigas! ¿Cómo están? ¿Sienten cuan ajetreado es esta época del año de la misma forma que yo? No me separo de mi agenda/calendario por que la verdad estos días que se avecinan voy a estar super ocupada y tengo que mantener la cordura. Así es que déjenme compartirles un nuevo descubrimiento que me ayudara a mantenerme calmada y contenta.

Turns out that in addition to dark chocolate, I also have a healthy obsession with anything that sets a pretty table. And what’s my excuse for my extensive china, table linens and all sorts of pretty table things? Having a Jewish home! (That doesn’t really count as an excuse, does it? After all… isn’t it a mitzvah?)

Aparte de la obsesión con el chocolate amargo, tengo una sana obsesión con una mesa linda y cualquier cosa que la embellezca. ¿Y cual es mi escusa para tener tantas vajillas, manteles, servilletas, individuales y todo tipo de cosas lindas para la mesa? ¡Pues que tengo un hogar judío! (¿Cuénta como excusa? ¿Mhhh… es mitzvá, no?)

Think about it. The permutations of beautiful table settings a Jewish woman puts together in a given year can be endless! Lets see… every day meat, every day dairy, festive meat, festive dairy, extra fancy (hello lovely gold rim plates on Pesach… ok let’s not get carried away, but one could dream)… Shabbat evening, Shabbat lunch, Rosh Hashana, Erev Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, Pesach, Shavuot… anyone doing the math here? Don’t tell your husbands I made you blow your budget on more china, please. ;-)

Bueno pero pensémoslo. ¡Las permutaciones de mesas bellas que una mujer judía pone en un dado año son casi infinítas! Veamos… mesa de carne para diario, mesa de lácteo para diario, mesa de carne festiva, mesa de lácteo festiva, extra festiva (esos bellos platos con borde de oro que salen sólo en Pesach…ok en mis sueños, pero al menos, soñar no cuesta )… Shabbat noche, Shabbat día, Rosh Hashaná, Erev Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, Pesach, Shavuot… ¿alguien esta haciendo la matemática? No les digan a sus esposos que yo les permití romper el presupuesto en vajilla, por fa. ;-)

So, since I love any excuse to put together a pretty table, I was thrilled when I was recently asked to host a ladies’ gathering.

Así que como me encanta tener cualquier excusa para poner una linda mesa, me alegré cuando alguien me pidió hacer una reunión de chicas en mi casa.

Around the same time, my friend Clara mentioned that her husband is now selling beautiful plates and cutlery. (We both share the same obsession, so I wasn’t surprised she was sharing the excitement with me.) “And guess what, Yael?” says Clara. “What!? They’re a great price?” I say. “Better than that, they are disposable!” says Clara. I respond, “Ahm… Clara, you know disposables are not my thing.”

Mas o menos al mismo tiempo, mi amiga Clara me comentó que su esposo está vendiendo unos platos y cubiertos bellos. (Ambas compartimos la misma obsesión, así que no me sorprendió cuando me compartió su emoción.) “Y adivina, que, Yael,” dijo Clara ” ¿Qué, tienen buen precio?” Dije yo. Clara me contestó, “Aún mejor que eso. ¡Son desechables!” A lo cual yo respondí, “Ahmm, Clara, tu sabes que no me gustan mucho los desechables.”

I seldom use disposables in my house. During particularly busy weeks, I give in, drop my shtick and simplify my life. Most recently we’ve used more because I have a two year old who has broken most of our every day dairy set, so we end up having to complement our breakfast dishes with disposables (shhh don’t tell my mother). None of my other kids did this, but you know, it’s a different story with each kid. It’s ok, you know I’ll be happy to go out shopping for a new set. ;-)

Es raro que utilice desechables en mi casa. Durante semanas particularmente locas, si me rindo y me simplifico la vida y los utilizo. Ultimamente si hemos utilizado mas desechables por que mi pequeno de dos años ha logrado romper la mitad de la vajilla de leche de diario, así que terminamos complementando con desechables (shhh no le digan a mi mama). Ninguno de mis otros hijos hizo esto, pero bueno es una historia diferente con cada hijo. No importa, ya sabemos que iré felizmente a comprar vajilla nueva. ;-)Anyhow, back to the disposables. If we use them for Shabbat, it must be because I’m sick in bed with a fever.Ok, de vuelta a los desechables. Si los utilizamos para Shabbat, quiere decir que estoy enferma en cama y con fiebre.

But then there’s holidays throughout the year, namely Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot, which involve many meals and many guests and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thus, in order to save my sanity and be a happy, gracious hostess, I get over my snobbery and use disposables. But, I’ll admit that I always feel a bit like I’m somehow not giving the holiday the proper respect it deserves.

Pero luego hay fiestas durante el año, específicamente Pesaj y Shavuot, las cuales envuelven muchas comidas y muchos invitados, y eso no lo cambiaría por nada. Así es que para mantener la cordura y ser una anfitriona feliz y amable, sobrepaso mi “snobismo” y uso desechables. Pero, admito que siempre me siento como que no le estoy dando a la fiesta el respeto que se merece.

Now the hardest and the most guilt producing holiday for me is Pesach (Jewish guilt comes in many strange ways). One is supposed to use his/her finest china on Pesach. While I lived abroad, I used real china even for meals of 20 people (yes, I owned that much Pesach china and cutlery). Once I moved back to the States, the lack of live-in help, plus the fact that we don’t have a dishwasher for Pesach and have to hand wash everything, just made it impossible for me to keep up my ~~shtick~~ snobbery.

Ahora, la fiesta mas difícil y que me produce mas sentido de culpa es Pesach (el sentimiento de culpa judío se expresa de maneras un poco extrañas). Se supone que utilicemos nuestra vajilla mas fina en Pesaj. Cuando vivíamos en China teníamos vajilla de Pesach para 20 personas. Una vez me mudé de vuelta a los Estados Unidos, entre tener menos ayuda doméstica, y que lavamos todo a mano y no en lavadora de platos en Pesaj, no pude continuar con mi ~~“shtick”~~ “snobismo”.

By the way, I know I’m making a lot of fun of myself here, today, so if you’re with me, feel free to tell me in the comments section. It’ll be nice to know there are other lunatics like me out there. ;-)

De paso, ya se que estoy riéndome de mi misma muchísimo hoy, pero si alguna está en el mismo bote, me lo pueden decir en la sección de comentarios para no sentirme que soy la única loca en este mundo. ;-)

Throughout the eight day holiday, we usually have a few meals that will consist of my family and a guest or two (not the sedarim), and if I have cleaning help that day, the Pesach china most certainly comes out.

Durante los ocho días de la fiesta, tenemos algunas comidas mas pequeñas en familia y/o con uno o dos invitados (no los sederim) y si tengo ayuda domestica ese día, si saco la vajilla de Pesaj.

So back to my dear friend Clara. She decided to challenge me to use her husband’s product at my upcoming ladies’ lunch. Next thing I know, her husband shows up at my house with a delivery of these beauties. Surprise!!!

Pero de vuelta a mi amiga Clara. Clara me retó a que utilice los productos que está vendiendo su esposo, en mi almuerzo de chicas que se avecinaba. El próximo día su esposo se presentó en mi casa con estas bellezas. ¡Sorpresa!

Did you see that cutlery? Yes, my dears, all disposable and beautiful.

¿Vieron esos cubiertos? Sí, amigas, todo desechable y bello.

I lost the challenge. I’m quite competitive and don’t like losing, but I’ll admit that I’m sold on this new product. Perfect for beautifying the festive holiday table, yet practical enough to keep our sanity so that we can be gracious hostesses, wives and mothers. (¡Muy Importante, Amigas!)

Perdí el reto. Soy bastante competitiva y no me gusta perder, pero admito que me convencí de este producto. Perfecto para embellecer la mesa festiva y a la vez prácticos, para que mantengamos la cordura y seamos anfitrionas, esposas y madres alegres y agradables. (¡Muy importante, amigas!)

Plus, these could work so well for a Bat Mitzvah, Bar Mitzvah, Brit Milah, and many other Jewish celebrations.
