A new calendar || Un nuevo calendario

December 31, 2014 by Yael Leave a Comment

B”H

We’re about to begin a new year according to the Gregorian calendar that most of us go by and I just found the perfect agenda for the coming year that has me super excited (Found it at Marshall’s, of course). I’m a pretty organized person, (my family would say “extremely”) but I can always be more organized and one of the “systems” in my life which needs much improvement is my calendar/agenda “system”. Let me explain.

Me explico.

agenda-with-flowers

When I schedule things in my calendar, I cannot ignore the Hebrew dates, because I will get myself in big trouble. My life constantly revolves around both Hebrew dates and Gregorian dates. So I need a system that encompasses both, which is what most Jewish calendars out there do. The problem is that I have yet to find a Jewish calendar that fits my organizational needs.

No offense to the wonderful institutions that put these Jewish calendars together, and mail them out to us for free. I really don’t want to be ungrateful. It’s just that practically speaking, most of these calendars leave much room for improvement. They are either huge (with the intent of being on your kitchen wall, perhaps), or tiny (with the intent of being on your purse, perhaps).  Either way, there’s never enough space on the date itself to write much. They are not an agenda. I get it.

Entiendo.

And then there’s the design. When I’m trying to get my mind and life organized, I need minimalist design, I need open, clean space – and honestly the pictures of the wonderful Jewish organization’s programing and/or the Jewish art they’ve chosen, and/or the ads of the sponsors from the community- all of these add clutter to my already cluttered brain. I can’t handle it. For my brain to work effectively I need uncluttered and pretty.

No puedo.

notes

Thus, I usually just have a pretty notebook that I carry everywhere and in which I write EVERYTHING. I love my notebook but it definitely has setbacks. I also, jot down appointments into my phone, if and when I remember. In the mean time, the Jewish Calendar hides in a drawer in my kitchen or in my office and I take it out from time to time to jot down what I ‘ve already put into my notebook and/or my phone and to make sure I’m not getting myself into a scheduling mess. Well guess what? Keeping your Jewish calendar inside a drawer because you’re a design snob, is a guaranteed way to get you into a scheduling mess. You just ask me.

Sólo preguntenme a mi.

out-of-drawer

By the time I pull my dear Jewish calendar out of the drawer, I’m in a scheduling mess already and/or have overbooked myself. These could look like dental appointments five days before Purim when the Purim cards have to be finished and mailed out and the mishloat manot have to be in process. Or, how about generously committing myself to host a fancy lunch for potential investors of our company, just a few days before a three day Jewish holiday (Yom Tov)!? But, to top it off, I   realize (only after I’ve committed myself) that the kids will all be home from school at 12 pm on the date of the investors’ lunch. Why? Well because teachers also need time to prepare for a three day holiday. I’m a teacher but I wouldn’t have read that memo because I was busy planning an investors’ lunch!). Anyhow, you see how being a design snob can get you me in trouble?

So my “system” or lack of is is a problem-a big one, especially when you’re juggling multiple  people’s schedules in a two system calendar (Gregorian and Hebrew). And yes, I know there are Jewish Calendar apps out there that could solve part of the problem, but they will not address the fact that I’m a child of the seventies and thus, I still have a thing for pen and paper. (I still love snail mail and I still write a lot of thank you notes, by hand). I like to write things on paper, look at them, get them done and… cross them out!

(¡Aún envío tarjetas escritas a mano!) ¡tacharlas!

super-close-up2

So until I, or someone else, goes to market with a beautifully designed Jewish calendar that is a pleasure to carry around- a perfect combination of form and function- I have to re-create my own. And this year, I think I found the perfect little agenda, to do so.

stripes-close-up

The fact that it is leather bound, with navy and white stripes and gold is what made me pick it up in the first place. So predictable right? If you’ve been to my house, you know what I mean. The inside is just wonderful, enough space on each date, plus ample space for notes. The only thing missing were the Hebrew dates, but so was a dash of pink ;-)

jewish-calendar-big

So after everyone went to sleep at night, I pulled out a pink pen and the huge, Jewish calendar from the drawer and got to work. Tedious. I’ll admit.

at-the-library

I had to finish the next day at the Houston Public Library (I told you here that we visit often.)

But now that all the Hebrew dates are in, and the system is ready to be implemented, I’m excited to try it and hopefully, I’ll be more organized in 2015.

Do you have a favorite calendar or agenda that you use? Are you a pen and paper person or do you just use your phone calendar? Have I found a business opportunity here? Anyone out there want me to create beautiful Jewish Calendar/Agendas and sell them? I really love the idea.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
