A Festive Drink: Bul/Sangria ||Una bebida festiva: bul/sangría

February 10, 2015 by Yael Leave a Comment

B”H

I’m a big fan of a fruity drink like a bul (pronounced “bool”) or sangria. In Puerto Rico we call it “bul” (“bulles” plural) rather than punch. If it includes wine and other alcohol then we just call it “sangría.” I make it for any festive occasion- a women’s gathering, bridal shower, birthday celebrations, and so on. It’s pretty much no fail and always a hit (and you all know from my challah recipe here, that I’m all for no fail recipes).

So last week I decided to make a Tu B’Shvat Bul for my family. They loved it so much that I replicated it and served it for Shabbat lunch. Everyone was thrilled with the surprising Shabbat treat!

I have inherited many bul recipes from family, all incredibly creative and delicious. But, honestly the great thing about a Bul or a Sangria is that you can pretty much use anything you have handy- which is what I always end up doing (practical? well, we talked about that here before… didn’t we?).

This time since I was going with a Tu B’Shvat theme, I opted for a pomegranate juice base (one of the Seven Species of the Land of Israel) and I then developed the bul from there.

On this occasion, I added sparkling water, but if you’d like a sweeter taste, use Seven Up or Sprite instead. You may also use liquid sugar. The amounts will vary by taste, so I’m not even going to try to tell you any proportions here today. Don’t get frustrated, it’s really kind of liberating.

At this point you would also add your wine and/or your alcohol, if you’d like. Since I was doing this for my family, including the children, I didn’t add any alcohol.

I added fresh orange juice to the pomegranate juice and sparkling water mix. Then I added the fruit. This time I went with green apples (unpeeled), green and red grapes, strawberries, and sliced oranges, limes and lemons.

The most important thing is to let your drink sit in the fridge at least overnight, but I prefer to go even a bit longer than that.

Finally, another one of my bul/sangria tricks is to freeze some fruit, in order to use it as “ice” when serving the drink. You don’t want to add ice and water your delicious drink down, so I always freeze some fruit to add in at the last minute. I’ve done it many times with cantaloupe balls. Or you could do what I did in this case, which is to add frozen green grapes and purple grapes (another of the Seven Species of the Land of Israel).

Muchas veces he utilizado bolas de melon congeladas.

I also found fresh pineapple chunks in my freezer (which I’d frozen to use in smoothies) and into my bul they went… for a nice Latin/Caribbean touch. ;-)

This definitely made both our Tu B’Shvat and our Shabbat more festive. I’m ready to let my kids experiment with different juices and fruits for next Shabbat and come up with their own bul :-). I’ll let you know the results.

Have a lovely week!

¡Que tengan una linda semana!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
