Wednesday Wink || Guiñada divina

April 8, 2015 by Yael Leave a Comment

B”H

Hello everyone! Welcome to another installment of Wednesday Wink. Wednesday Wink is a series on Divine Providence (Hashgacha Pratit). Divine Providence means that G-d is involved in every detail of our lives, albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation. Thus, nothing in our lives is “coincidence”, although it may very well seem like it.

¡Hola a todas!

Today’s story happened to us, very recently.

The week before Pesach my husband got a call from a non-Jewish acquaintance saying that he knows a Consultant whom he thinks would be good for my husband to meet. There was no particular reason, or specific need to meet this person, but still my husband reached out to him and they had a nice call discussing my husband’s business, how he could be of help to the business, and so on. During that phone call the  Consultant said he would like to visit my husband at his office. They set a date.

The Consultant arrived at the office on Tuesday morning. Seeing that my husband is obviously Jewish, he mentioned sort of in passing that he is Jewish as well. So my husband immediately asked him about his Passover Seder plans. My husband soon found out that the Consultant had not attended a Seder in years. As the Consultant later told us, whatever little Jewish education he had, pretty much finished on the day of his Bar Mitzvah back in New York.

He was not aware that Seder nights were that coming Friday and Saturday! In fact, he married a non-Jewish woman and seemingly set up a very non-Jewish life for himself. When moving to Houston he chose an area far away from where the Houston Jewish community lives, and without any awareness that there is an active and vibrant community here.

My husband extended him a warm, yet insistent invitation to come to our family’s Seder. The Consultant later told us about the conversation with my husband,  “He would not take ‘no’ for an answer; so here I am.” During the five or so minutes that I got to speak with this man upon his arrival, I realized that he was very disconnected from anything Jewish, and was in for the shock of his life…

Let’s just say that the way we celebrate Pesach in our family is quite the wild and funny scene in every sense… the kids are all up late, talking at the table, sharing from their Hagaddot and what they learned in from school, the seder moves along in different languages (Hebrew, English, Yiddish, Spanish)… It is not sufficient that my kids constantly interject, but so does my husband giving us wonderful insights to the Haggada….The kitchen looks like something strange, for lack of a better word- as our regular kitchen is hidden behind a shower curtain and my wonderful make-shift Pesach kitchen is out in its full glory (ovens and stove tops and all). It’s all very hard to describe. Then we finally get to eating the matza, and my husband is very into the whole eating matza and maror experience. And to top it all off, because we are careful not to make the matzah wet, we remove it from the table for the meal! What!? No matzah balls!?

Throughout the evening it was quite evident that the Consultant was uncomfortable and confused, but we tried our best to make it all fun for him. But as it got so very late, the man did not last through the whole Seder. He left after Shulchan Orech. I honestly thought we would never hear from him again.

On Monday afternoon we went on a family outing, and the Consultant calls my husband and says, “Hey, can we meet again today?”

I do not know what the conclusion to this will be, but what I do know is that it was not a coincidence that this man had to meet my husband in order to attend a Seder (and what a Seder it was!)

Moreover, meeting this Jewish man made my family and I vividly aware that there really exists a Fifth Son out there (as the Lubavitcher Rebbe explained). The Haggada talks about Four Sons and the Rebbe explained that in our generation there is also a Fifth Son- one who unfortunately is so disconnected from his/her Jewish roots, that he/she does not even know there is a Seder that night. We learned first hand the importance of  looking out for one another and making sure that all Jews are all included- that no son/daughter is, G-d forbid, left out….

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.

Yael helped me style my son's upshernish as well as my living room. She is wonderful to work with! She is talented and extremely organized which is super helpful! She has an incredible eye and knows how to beautify absolutely anything!
