Wednesday Wink || Guiñada divina

April 1, 2015 by Yael Leave a Comment

B”H

This is the home stretch right before Pesach and I’m feeling it. But I’m still smiling, my friends… still smiling.

Estamos en la recta final antes de Pesaj y lo estoy sintiendo, pero me sigo sonriendo amigas, me sigo sonriendo…Welcome to another installment of Wednesday Wink. Wednesday Wink is a series on Divine Providence (Hashgacha Pratit). Divine Providence means that G-d is involved in every detail of our lives, albeit His involvement is concealed within nature, or the natural order of creation. Thus, nothing in our lives is “coincidence”, although it may very well seem like it.

I received today’s Wednesday Wink from a dear reader who heard it first hand from Rabbi Eli Hecht from California. I had chills when I read it. Thank you, for sharing!

A handful of years ago Rabbi Eli Hecht did what many Chabad Shluchim do near Pesach: He made a list of all the Jews in somewhat nearby nursing homes, intending to give each of them some shmurah matza. However, as you know, things are very busy before Pesach, and “suddenly” it was erev Pesach and he re-found that list under some other papers.

Determined to visit at least one Jew, he chose a name–Mr. Moskowitz–at a nursing home about 20 minutes away. When he got there, the Filipino lady at the front desk told him that Mr. Moskowitz was not very lucid and would not care if he brought him anything, so he may as well not visit him. But Rabbi Hecht was insistent. She then gave him long directions to get to Mr. Moskowitz’s room. A few lefts, then a right and so on until he would see Mr. Moskowitz’s room in 26B.

The place was indeed large and confusing, and there seemed to be mostly non-Jews there, but Rabbi Hecht followed the directions, found room 26B, and walked in with a happy, energetic, “Good Erev Pesach, Mr. Moskowitz!” Immediately he saw that the name on the door was not Moskowitz, so he quickly said, “Oh, I’m sorry, I made a mistake.” There was an old man, lying in the bed, who answered in perfect Yiddish, “G-d doesn’t make mistakes, and you didn’t make a mistake.”

Rápidamente dijo, “Discuple, me equivoqué.” Un señor mayor acostado en la cama le contestó en un Yiddish perfecto, “Di-s no comete errores y usted no cometió ningún error.”Startled, Rabbi Hecht walked closer, and began a conversation with this person. The man said he had been in that nursing home since it opened- at least 20 years! Rabbi Hecht asked the man if he had any relatives, and the man said no. Then he asked how old he was, and the man said that he was in his 90’s, but he was too old to remember exactly how old he was, and, anyway, he was going to die soon. Rabbi Hecht replied something like, “We’ll talk about that next time I visit you, but right now I have some shmurah matzah and want to wish you a good Pesach.”

Por ahora, tengo matzá shmurá para Pesaj que le quiero regalar y quiero desearle un feliz Pesaj.”The man said, “No, you don’t understand, I am going to die soon: Last week I had a dream about my mother and she was smiling. I’ve heard that when you dream about your parents and they are smiling, they are getting ready to welcome you into the next world.

I don’t have a relative in the world, and ever since that dream, I’ve been praying to G-d to send me someone who will make sure that I’m buried in a Jewish cemetery. In this nursing home when you die without relatives, the county comes and puts you on a gurney and buries you in the county graveyard. I just can’t be buried in a goyishe graveyard, so I’ve been praying everyday for G-d to send me someone who will help me. You see, you didn’t make a mistake in coming here, because G-d sent you, and G-d doesn’t make mistakes!”

Usted no cometió ningún error en venir aquí hoy, por que Di-s lo envió y Di-s no comete errores.”Rabbi Hecht spoke with the man at length and said that he expects to see him again. (There wasn’t time afterwards to look for Mr. Moskowitz, of course, with Yom Tov coming in, in a few hours.) But, he also promised the man that he would go to the front desk and tell them that he (Rabbi Hecht) was the person to contact in case the elderly man passed away. He let them know, went home, and the 8 days of Pesach passed. Right afterwards, he got a call from the nursing home letting Rabbi Hecht know that the man passed away. They told him that if he didn’t come in one hour, the county would take the man’s body to the county morgue! Port_Gibson_MS_Jewish_Cemetery_alt

Rabbi Hecht rushed phone calls here and there, contacted the chevra kadisha, paid for a spot in the cemetery (as the man had no money), organized a minyan, and so on. The man had a proper Jewish burial, just as he had wanted. And this man’s beautiful message to Rabbi Hecht and to all of us, G-d doesn’t make mistakes, and his messengers don’t make mistakes…

Have you ever felt a “wink from above”? I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. Creativity aside, she is a wealth of knowledge, both passionate and practical, about what she teaches and how she teaches it. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
