Wednesday Wink || Giñada divina

July 29, 2015 by Yael 2 Comments

B”H

Hi and welcome to another episode of Wednesday Wink. Today’s Wink is such a special treat. If you’ve ever wondered whether your actions have an impact, hold on to your seats, because today’s Wink is guaranteed to inspire you and get you off your seats to go do more of whatever good thing you’re already doing! Thank you to reader and friend Diani for sharing her family’s beautiful story with us. Welcome, Diani!

¡Bienvenida, Diani!

This is not a story about a boy who would do anything for a girl. It is not even a story about a father who would do anything for his daughter… Let me explain…

My parents both grew up in Colombia, yet they had different Jewish upbringings. While my mother grew up in Bogota, in a family that was Shomer Mitzvot (observant of the mitzvot), my father grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia, a smaller city which at the time did not have a significant observant community. Thus, when my parents met and began dating, my maternal grandparents, Sami and Charlotte Rohr z”lb, became concerned.

My grandparent’s had known my father’s parents, Manuel and Sonia Tabacinic z”lb, for many years, and they genuinely liked their son – my father. What was not to like? He was sweet, smart, dashing, and kind. He was a great catch!

¿Cómo no? Era dulce, inteligente, guapísimo y gentil. ¡Tremendo prospecto!

Except, my grandfather, Sami Rohr z”lb, worried about the spiritual welfare, not only of his children, but of his grandchildren, and future generations as well. How could he allow his daughter to marry someone who had not had the benefit of a Jewish education and whose connection to Yiddishkeit at the time was, shall we say… still dormant!?

But before my grandfather had much time to think about the problem facing him, my parents showed up at my grandparents’ doorstep to announce their plans to “build a Jewish Home.”

My grandfather insisted that if that was the case, my father would have to agree to keep a kosher home and respect Shabbos.

Surprisingly, my father agreed on the spot!

Sorprendentemente, mi papá aceptó inmediatamente.

My grandfather persisted. “Not so fast. In order to do that, you will have to study Torah every day, at least for four hours DAILY!”

“I will do whatever it takes,” my father readily replied. (Can you tell he was blindly in love?)

But my grandfather would not let him off so easily. “If I send you a Rabbi to Barranquilla, will you learn with him?”

Without missing a beat (and definitely without knowing what he was getting himself into!) my father replied “Every day! Four hours! Whatever it takes!”

Now my grandfather had a problem. Where was he going to find a rabbi in the 1970’s,  willing to travel to Barranquilla, Colombia to teach Torah!?

My grandfather wrote to the Lubavitcher Rebbe for advice. The Rebbe insisted on sending not one, but two young men.  Soon after, my grandfather called my father to tell him that two young Lubavitchers would be arriving and my father should plan to pick them up at the airport… But my father had never seen a Lubavitcher Rabbi!

“You say I should meet the two rabbis at the airport? But how will I know what they look like?”

“¿Que los vaya a recoger al aeropuerto? ¿Pero, cómo voy a reconocerlos?”

My grandfather just smiled. “Don’t worry… You’ll recognize them.”

Needless to say, my father’s life was completely transformed (in a good way!). My parents got married, and built their Jewish Home against all odds, and my father continued learning long after the young rabbis left.

Moreover, the entire Barranquilla community was transformed. These rabbis touched the souls of several people in the community who then began to push for more Torah. Thus, Barranquilla eventually received permanent Chabad Shluchim, who made Yiddishkeit a daily part of the community.

Following on my grandparents’ footsteps, my parents raised their children in a home where Judaism permeated every day life. My parents taught us to always strive for more in spiritual matters- there was always something more we could do… one more mitzvah we could take on, one more thing about ourselves that we could improve, one more act of kindness…

Eventually I married my husband, who had a similar upbringing to mine. Together B”H we have strengthened ourselves and our commitment to build a home based on the teachings of our parents-  keep going… keep doing more of what Hashem wants… there is always another mitzvah we could be doing…

Years later, we were able to feel and see H’s hand in all that had transpired during the course of over thirty years…

My father took all of his children and grandchildren on a special vacation to Israel. While walking through the holy streets of Tzfat, my father mentioned to our tour guide that the only person he had ever met from the city of Tzfat was a young Rabbi, who had learned with him many years back in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The tour guide asked my father for the Rabbi’s name and when my father told him, his eyes opened wide. With a broad smile, he immediately pulled out his phone and called his wife. “Go knock on the neighbor’s door. The family I’m guiding knows him wants to take him out to lunch right now!” (only in Israel, right?)

My father and his former teacher joyfully reunited and reminisced. My father had the privilege to show his former teacher not just what had become of him and his Yiddishkeit, but children and grandchildren who were a product of the education he had ventured out to give a man in a small town in South America, thirty five years earlier! The then young rabbi never imagined to meet my father’s children one day- proud, strong Jews, now raising their own children following the Torah that he had once taught my father to follow.

My father could have crossed paths with his long lost teacher years before. Yet, it wasn’t until my father had raised his own children with a strong Jewish foundation, that H”, in his great kindness and wisdom, allowed the encounter to happen. An encounter that showed us first hand the impact of our deeds – an impact far beyond what we could ever imagine.

And so, the story about a man who wanted the best for his daughter; and the boy, who wanted to get the girl; is really a story about a man’s love and commitment to Hashem, through which he left a lasting positive impact in the world.

Wow! Amazing and beautiful, right!? Have you ever feel a Wink from above? I look forward to hearing it and sharing it with Jewish Latin Princess’ readers. We all draw strength and inspiration from each of our stories!

Wow! ¿¡Que historia tan bella e impresionante, cierto!? ¿Alguna vez has sentido una guiñada divina?

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
