Welcome to Jewish Latin Princess everyone! This is your host, Yael Trusch. Today we move to the film industry. I have Director of the documentary 93 Queen, Paula Eiselt. 93 Queen is Paula’s feature directorial debut. The film has had screenings at dozens of film festivals around the world. I had the pleasure of watching the screening in Houston recently and let me tell you this film totally delivered to the hype it’s received.

Most recently, the film was nominated for the 2018 Women Film Critics Circle’s Karen Morley Award for best exemplifying a woman’s place in history or society, and a courageous search for identity. In September 2018, 93 Queen was broadcast on PBS’s prestigious award-winning series POV and was the sole documentary film in 2018 selected to receive marketing support from the NYC Mayor’s Office Made in NY film program. Super cool eh!?

And so is it’s wonderful Director, Paula. We go behind the scenes, literally. Why did Chassidic women from Borough Park, allow this film to be made – considering that they were already creating controversy in their community by starting the first all-female ambulance corps in NYC. Why instigate more fire, by being on a film? And how did Paula get the idea and approach them? What did she learn about her own Jewish observance from her experience in the five years that she was immersed in these women’s world. What were some of the challenges that she experienced as a film maker, by taking this project on? And so much more! If you haven’t watched the film, I hope you’ll want to find a screening near you, after this interview. It is phenomenal.

And before I bring Paula on, I want to give a shout out to a wonderful listener who wrote to me on Instagram in Spanish actually and also wrote a review on iTunes where she said,

“I’ve learned so much from this podcast, it really shows the integration between business, spirituality and beautiful values that resonate with me. I’m not Jewish but this podcast speaks to me very deeply as a woman who’s building a meaningful life. Thank You so much, Yael.”

Wow, and thank You! That was beautiful. I’m glad to have you here. And btw, it’s interesting how she found the show. If you recall many episodes ago on Episode 17, I had Venezuelan Journalist, Shirley Varnagy. She caught that interview which is one of my best interviews by far, so if you speak Spanish, please do not miss it. It is incredible! So, she caught that interview, when Shirley so generously promoted it, and has been a listener ever since. What about you, listener, I want to hear from you. Would love to know how you found the show and what you’re enjoying the most. Leave me a Review on iTunes or find me on Instagram.

And now, onto my wonderful guest, Paula Eiselt.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
