Fresh summer tops that are not so “fresh” || Camisas fresquitas pero no fresquitas

mood-board-with-title

B”H

Insert me singing Andres Calamaro’s “Hace Calor” as an intro to this post… get it?  “Hace calor, hace calor, estaba esperando…” Sorry for the 90’s music digression but if you know what I’m talking about, you’re happily singing now. I know it! Otherwise, here we go…. It’s a whooping 99 degrees in Houston, TX and only getting hotter, my friends…

Someone recently asked me  about dressing modestly (tzenua) in the summer. “Isn’t it too hot?” It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. There’s a simple trick to it- one that I learned it from my mother. She taught it to me, not because of modesty standards, but because we lived in warm weather and well one needs to “dress appropriately for the weather,” Right? As my mother would say, “wear fabrics that breathe.” An that is really the trick… Natural Fibers!

I’m not sure why but I still see plenty of women in the Jewish world wearing fabrics that just make me hot looking at them! Please, please… if you haven’t done it yet, I beg you to store the lycra, polyester and anything else synthetic in a box on the top of your closet for the next few months… Not sure what is synthetic? Let me give you a hint without you having to go check all the tags. If the fabric is stretchy, thick, and/or shiny, you’re probably handling one of the culprits of your hot flashes! Also, if it sticks to your body like rubber….well yeah… HOT (and not in a good way, if there’s ever a good way to that word, but you get what I mean.)

I think we all get how a flowy, light summer skirt made of natural fibers works. But hey a long  or 3/4 sleeve top does not have to be asfixiating either and if you follow my tips: natural fiber and loose, you won’t look shlumpy or out of style.

Cotton and linen are your best friends during the summer, always, and especially if you want to dress modestly. You could get away with a skirt in a soft rayon, as long as you top it with a cotton or linen top. And of course you could use chambray. But that’s pretty much it.

1/2/3/4/5

1|| This top is so super cute with its embroidered sleeve detail and it comes in both mint and off white. It’s on the girls section but hey you can order the XL or the XXL – oldest trick in the book! (And the sale price is amazing!)

2|| Love a good buffalo check and of course you all know blue is my favorite color. This top is soft and light and screams spring/summer

3|| I must get this one ASAP – if you want to cover your collar bone you might have to pull it up a bit and you probably need a very light undershirt. This one is my favorite and it comes in the same mosaic blue! Score!

¡Super!

4|| This white blouse looks amazing. I love the original design and nothing looks better in summer than a nice crisply ironed white blouse.

5|| I love a good print and this seems so summery.

In general I’m not a fan of layering at all (with the purpose of covering up/make a top “tznius,” I mean). So I avoid anything that requires a long sleeve undershirt, especially those stretchy ones – enter synthetic fiber again (enemy number one!).

Yeah, yeah, you say some of these tops might need an undershirt to be really tzinius…I hear ya and I have you covered… same rule applies, please dump the lycra tank tops. This one by Gap has been around for ages. Banana Republic used to carry a similar one that I use to like even more. Thin, cotton, light, you’re covered!

So what do you think? The summer + tznius combo seem less threatening or foreign now?

Stay cool… (Insert Andres Calamaro again!)

Andrés Calamaro de nuevo… :-)

P.S. Yes you will need to own an iron often, hire someone to iron, or visit the dry cleaners. Sorry, nothing is perfect… yet! ;-)

xoxo

Raise your hand if you have curly hair? Very curly Raise your hand if you have curly hair? Very curly hair? 🙌🏻 I don't. But, I have a daughter who has the most beautiful curly red hair. Except curly hair requires work. And well it's hard for kids to stay on top of it and moms.... I mean you all know how much we have on our plates at the moment. ⠀
⠀
So, the other day, I was shocked to find out that my gorgeous daughters' hair was covered in knots. I mean, really bad knots, the ones that you just really would have to cut unless you want to spend hours dealing with. ⠀
But, if I cut, I would literally be leaving her with zero hair. ⠀
⠀
So armed with patience and love I set out to shampoo her hair, condition it well and start working through those knots. I found out that coconut oil would help. “Great! We have that at home!” “Hmm we don't have so much left.” A short while into the painful process (for mom and child) we started running out of oil. ⠀
⠀
It's 9:30 pm at night. "Hubby, please, please can you go get coconut oil?" He heads over to Walgreens as it was the closest place he could think of, thinking it's not very likely, but worth the try. Starts looking in the food section and nothing.
Heads over to a Walgreens employee. ⠀
⠀
“Do you sell coconut oil?” And as though she’d been privy to the drama going on at home, she says, “You mean to untangle hair!?”
⠀
Hubby: “HOW did you know that?”⠀

Nice lady: “Oh it’s the best. Let me show you, it’s in the hair section.” And then she proceeds to tell him how great this stuff is for getting tough knots out of hair and how to do it. ⠀
Hubby is in shock, says "thank you" and comes home to "You won't believe what happened!?" And we all said, “wow, what Hashgacha Pratit!”

Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
