Dining Room Updates || Mejoras en el Comedor

B”H

Shavua Tov, everyone! One of my favorite things of summer is the morning light and the quiet that comes with it. Summer around here means tired kids (from swimming the day before) roll out of bed so much later ;-). One morning last week, as I walked past my dining room, the house was still quiet, and the most beautiful light was coming in through the windows. I ran to get my camera so I could show you my dining room.

¡Shavua Tov, amigas!

I’m really pleased with how this room has come along. Last year, right before Rosh Hashanah we repainted the room Benjamin Moore’s 1632 Glass Slipper. It’s a light blue with a ton of grey, so it doesn’t go baby at all. It’s soothing and elegant and I totally love it.

We also added the molding and chair rail, which took the room to a whole other level.

We got the table three years ago. It’s a vintage McGuire bamboo and brass table with a 90″ glass top. Such a big table required a lazy susan. My husband went down to China Town to get the bearing and I spray painted it to match the table’s brass cups on each leg. I ordered a glass to put on the lazy susan bearing and voilà. The lazy susan is quite the conversation piece. We love this table. It’s so fun and we can comfortably sit 12 people.

After we had bought the table I found 12 vintage bamboo and cane chairs on ebay that I knew would be perfect. I worked tirelessly on them myself. I couldn’t find any other before pictures, but this one gives you an idea of how they looked before. I had already unscrewed all the cushions off here to start cleaning and prepping for painting.

before

They needed work. I had to sand them and clean them quite well, spray paint them, and upholster them. I had just had a baby so the 12 chair project took me almost a year.

Necesitaban bastante trabajo.

I remember taking this picture upon finishing the first chair and marveling at my accomplishment.

So all and all I love this space and we’ve enjoyed a lot of wonderful meals and celebrations in it.

But there is one thing that still drives me nuts about it.

This brown formica buffet counter from the seventies, is an eye sore and I’m about to do something about it.

I light my Shabbat candles on that counter, thus it deserves some major attention. I’ve waited this long thinking one day I’ll change the counter, but why keep waiting? I think it’s worth a DIY. I’m doing a faux marble. Wish me luck. I have almost all my supplies ready, so as soon as everyone is in camp, I’m getting to work, because I’m determined to have this situation changed by this Rosh Hashanah. ;-) I’ll be sure to show you the results.

I have a great giveaway coming this week. So stay tuned. Have a great week!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.
