Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah and the rest of the Yamei Noraim (the High Holidays) is a month of preparation – spiritual preparation, that is. (I talk about my preparations last year here.) Included in these preparations is the custom to have our mezuzot checked during the month of Elul to make sure the parchment is still kosher.
