Meaningful Birthday || Un cumpleaños significativo

December 3, 2014 by Yael

B”H

Last week I shared with you how I put together a beautiful birthday party for my daughter. If you missed it, you can read about it here. Today, I’m going to share how I made this birthday party into a truly beautiful one, by adding an inner dimension of beauty to what might otherwise be considered, just food, games and decor.

When I plan my kids’ birthday parties, I have two main objectives in mind: 1- that the party be a lot of fun for them so that they have a positive association with this important Hebrew date; and 2- that the party contains a strong Judaic content, thus reflecting the significance of the date. I incorporate their viewpoints and consult with them while keeping in mind my objectives as a parent, so as to achieve a truly meaningful celebration in honor of their birthdays.

I prepared a mockup of the girls' craft, the night before, in order to show them what they would create.

One’s Hebrew Birthday is a day in which we focus more on giving than on receiving. As I mentioned here, on this day the person has access to the same unique energy that G-d put into the world in order to bring down his/her soul into the physical world. Therefore, the person has an added measure of strength on that day, and his/her birthday is a day in which, among other things, the person should and could: give blessings to others; celebrate with others and share with them words of Torah and inspiration; take on a new resolution; and give extra tzedakah. (You can find more information on the customs revolving around ones Hebrew Birthday, here.)

As you see here, I already had a table set up and ready for us to begin the first activity. It consisted of decorating small, personalized tzedakah boxes, which they would later fill up with coins via a scavenger hunt, and take as a “party favor” to continue to use for the mitzvah at home.

I found the idea at Chana’s Art Room. If you haven’t visited Chana’s blog, I highly recommend it, since it is full of beauty and creativity. I bought the boxes at our local judaica store, but you can get them here. I paid around $1 per box. Then, I went to Michael’s and got a small card stock paper notebook with beautiful prints (similar to this one), which I then cut to the exact measurement we were going to need. I also bought sticker labels (similar to these) in order to write the word tzedakah and/or the girls’ names, a bottle of Modge Podge, and some foam brushes. $20 dollars later (be sure to use Michael’s coupons), I had a beautiful, easy, and meaningful activity for the girls to do and a great “party favor” that would translate into more mitzvot. The girls absolutely loved the different choices of pretty papers and working on the craft together.

While we let the tzedakah boxes dry (having applied a thin layer of Modge Podge on top of the paper and label in order that they be well sealed), we went on to do a 12 pesukim (Torah verses) game. These are 12 Torah verses that children memorize from a young age (more on this here). The night before, my kids and I took 12 sheets of pink paper and wrote a number from 1 to 12 with our silver colored sharpie on each paper. I taped each paper on the grass with clear packing tape, forming a large circle. The game was a version of “musical chairs” in which I turned on lively Jewish music and the girls began running in the circle going from number to number. Once I stopped the music, they would freeze and I would call out a number. The girl standing on that number would then have to say the corresponding pasuk, while we all repeated after her. I never imagined that the game would be such a hit, but I’m glad I took my daughter’s suggestions and did it, because the girls were soooo happy. :-)

The girls then ran to grab their own, now-dry tzedakah boxes for the scavenger hunt, the goal of which was to collect as many of the scattered coins hidden throughout the park to put into their newly made tzedakah boxes. I think I timed the game to take around 5 minutes. They were so excited, running all over and then counting up how many coins they were able to collect.

And to conclude, we went on to the highlight of all our birthday parties- the piñata!

Zayin
by Elisheva Golani Photography

We never fail to add a Latin twist to our kids’ birthday parties, so while we always have a piñata, it’s not just any piñata… My husband and I work together every year to assemble-from-scratch a piñata in the shape of the Aleph-Beit letter that corresponds to the child’s age. This year we made it into a letter zayin (corresponding to the number seven) and of course it was pink to match the rest of the decor. :-)

Some shots of how we made the piñata

After a shower of kosher candy, a few more kosher treats, charity, words of Torah, and my daughter’s beautiful blessings to her friends, the party was over, but hopefully the inner and outer beauty of the birthday event made a lasting impression on these blossoming souls.

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.
