Looking Up || Mirando hacia arriba

I just heard this mashal (parable) at the Shabbat table that shook me to the core, as it was way too real. I think I might not be the only one who can relate to this mashal…

Justo escuché este mashal (parábola) en la mesa de Shabbat que me dejó fría. Creo que no soy la única que se podrá identificar con esta parábola…

There was once a man, whose office was on the top floor of a 50-story downtown building. In the middle of his stressful day, the man decided to go up to the roof to get a breath of fresh air.  The door locked behind him, and he realized that he had forgotten to take his phone.

Hubo una vez un señor cuya oficina residía en el último piso de un edificio de cincuenta pisos. En la mitad de su día ajetreado, decidió ir a la azotea del edificio para tomar un poco de aire fresco. La puerta se cerró detrás de el y justo entonces se dio cuenta de que estaba trancada y que no traía su teléfono.

He was locked on the roof with no way for anyone to know where he had gone.

Estaba trancado en la azotea, sin teléfono y sin manera de que alguien supiera donde estaba.

Anxious, he reached into his pocket to find a pocket full of $100 dollar bills. He decided to throw one $100 bill off the roof, to see if it would catch anyone’s attention down below. That didn’t work. The next person walking by took the $100 from the ground, quickly stuffed it in his pocket, and kept on walking, without missing a beat. So he continued to throw more $100 bills; more and more people grabbed them, but no one looked up to see where the bills were coming from. Until the pocketful of cash was all throw down, seemingly no way left to get someone below to look up.

Se acordó que tenía un montón de billetes en su bolsillo. Decidió tirar un billete de cien dólares a ver si alguien miraba para arriba. Alguien agarró el billete y siguió caminando. Continuó tirando y tirando billetes de $100 y mas y mas gente agarraba billetes, pero nadie miró hacia arriba a ver de donde venían los dólares. Ahora estaba atrapado en la azotea y sin dinero. 

Then he got another idea.  He picked up a small pebble and threw it off the roof. Lo and behold, someone got hit by the pebble and looked up angrily. The man on the top of the building who threw the pebble was discovered, and eventually rescued from the building’s forgotten rooftop.

Entonces se le ocurrió otra idea. Agarró una piedrita y la tiró de la zotéa. La piedrita le pegó a alguien quien inmediatamente miró hacia arriba enfurecido. Finalmente el hombre recibió atención y fue rescatado. 

The nimshal (the explanation of the parable) is kind of obvious (and painful). The man on the rooftop is H” and we are the people down below. He throws us down blessings and we often grab them, without even looking up to acknowledge the One Who is bestowing them upon us. Until, eventually, He throws a pebble, which painfully hits us, and we finally look up!

El nimshal (la explicación de la parábola) es bastante obvia (y dolorosa). El hombre es H” y nosotros somos las personas abajo. El nos tira bendiciones constantemente y las agarramos sin ni siquiera mirar hacia arriba y reconocer al que nos las envía. Eventualmente, nos tira una piedra, la cual nos pega dolorosamente e inmediatamente miramos hacia arriba.  

May we always be worthy of His daily blessings, and may we never have to receive a pebble in order to get us to look up, and pay attention. In this month of Elul, may we all recognize and make a conscious effort to acknowledge H” in our lives and thus may we merit to always receive His blessings only in revealed form.

Que siempre tengamos el merito de recibir sus bendiciones y que nunca tengamos que recibir una piedra para que lleguemos a prestar atención. En este mes de Elul reconozcamos y hagamos un esfuerzo consciente en reconocer a H” en nuestras vidas y así obtengamos el mérito de siempre recibir sus bendiciones de manera revelada únicamente.
