DIY Backdrop Wall for Styled Shoot || DIY fondo para sesión estilizada

January 20, 2015 by Yael

B”H

Today I’m showing you a DIY of a backdrop wall for a photography shoot… because you all need to know how to do that. Kidding! I’m pretty sure most of you do not need to know how to do this, but what you all need is a good friend and a story of mutual support and encouragement like the one I’m about to tell you between today and tomorrow.

I’m incredibly proud to tell you that my friend Elisheva Golani’s styled wedding photoshoot is featured today in Style Me Pretty. Please go here to check it out because the shoot is absolutely stunning and of course yours truly created the gold peony backdrop wall that you will see in some of the pictures.

A styled shoot means what you see is not a real event (although to us working on it, it feels quite real actually haha), but rather something a team of creatives along with a photographer created (it could be a product concept or any other event). After coming up with the concept, all the vendors and creatives involved create it visually. The photographer shoots it and submits it for publication. If the photographs are selected, then the shoot serves as inspiration for those planning a similar event, as well as promotion for the vendors that showcased their talent.

You might think my pride comes for having had a part, albeit small, in this shoot with such amazingly talented people. Not really. Enjoy the pretty pictures of me creating this wall for the styled shoot, but know that my real pride stems from the story I’m about to tell you.

No precisamente.

About four years ago I befriended a girl, almost 15 years my younger. She was in her second year of college, majoring in business. Knowing that I have an MBA, she came to me very frustrated with accounting and a few other courses. After a few minutes,  I understood clearly that there was more to this “I don’t get accounting,” conversation. It turned out that the young college student really had no interest in any of her business degree classes, and was pursuing this degree to please people other than herself.

The good news was that she really liked the classes that she was taking to fulfill what she had chosen as her minor: photography! Aha! Now the conversation started to interest me.

¡Aha! Ahora la conversación empezó a interesarme.

She didn’t just like photography. She loved it, was passionate about it, and was good at it! In fact, she confessed almost in secrecy that she wished she could one day be a photographer! (Gasp!) After the sweet 10 second confession, she forced herself to snap out of the dream and with a rather different tone of voice, reverted to a practical young lady who told me business was a solid degree one should have in order to do something with one’s life and maybe she could have photography as a hobby one day.

What!? Having been exactly where she was at her age (and having taken exactly the road she was headed on), I could not hold back my opinion on the matter. Although one could say I hardly knew this girl, I gave her my advice. (Jewish chutzpah? Maybe.) Remember that she came to me for advice on her troubles with her accounting class because I have an MBA.

Little did my young friend know that “accounting advice” would turn into “forget accounting, my dear.” I basically told her that it was time to stop putting energy and time on a business degree that she didn’t enjoy and focus on what she was really good at and enjoyed. I gave her a different perspective from what many of us have been taught. Become great at what you really love and have a talent for, and sure enough you will turn that into your business. Don’t waste your time and talent trying to fit into a mold. Go become a photographer now. For real and yes even without the business degree, go and have a photography business.

So my young friend changed her major to photography and started taking clients even while in school. She now has her photography business with her supportive husband. She loves what she does, is great at it, and makes a living out of it! At only 24 years old. Oh and guess what? She still does not know accounting. ;-)

¡Aún no sabe contabilidad! ;-)

But you know what? Neither do I! (Gasp!) You’re welcome. Glad I could help. Want professional advice, or help styling a shoot? Call me anytime my friends ;-) My perspective might surprise you, but who knows it might be for good, after all.

¡Ni yo tampoco! (¡Auch!)

There’s Part II to this story: “Measure for Measure.” To be continued next time, my darlings.

Have a lovely day!

¡Que pasen un lindo día!

I loved being part of your podcast, I had no idea what to expect and it was refreshing as a Jewish woman to participate in your podcast. Your questions related to what I do, combined with Judaism gave me a lot to think about. I love getting new questions instead of the typical “why did you start the project?” which is important but I’m glad you gave it a twist. I hope your listeners enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed being part of it! Thanks for challenging me to think about my topic and religion as one.

What a treat to hear Yael speak at the Jewish Women's Retreat in San Antonio.

In preparation for my wedding, I had the opportunity to learn with Yael. I'm also proud to say that through our experience together she has become a great friend and is someone that I can I always talk to.

Yael can be defined as “refreshing inspiration.” She is well-versed in an array of topics from Jewish femininity to design details. Every time I hear her at a speaking engagement or in passing conversation, she always brings an awareness of Jewish femininity to the forefront, constantly reminding women of their spiritual role and importance in ‘everyday’ things. I was thrilled that she passed this concept on, along with her deep knowledge of Judaism, to my daughter during their Bat Mitzvah lessons together. Yael always rises to the occasion (no pun intended) with her eye for design and attention to details. Her subtle palette, creativity and organizational skills are her recipe to success!

My daughter Stav had her Bat Mitzvah a few months ago.  I wanted Stav to go into her 'Bat Mitzvah' understanding the meaning of the term, and with the knowledge of how to apply it to her life. Even though she learns in a Jewish Orthodox school, I felt that she needed extra learning and inspiration for her coming of age.  Luckily, I knew Yael from before, and heard that she teaches Bat Mitzvah classes.  I had a feeling that this would be a good match... I wasn't wrong :)

Yael teaches ancient ideas in a modern way.  Stav came back from classes inspired, thinking and asking herself questions.  I'm thankful that my daughter had the opportunity to learn with Yael for her Bat Mitzvah in a interesting, welcoming and inspiring way.

Yael has creativity, vision, and energy, and she uses them all to the fullest for her clients. She came up with the color scheme, all the accessories, the overall “look” of the day, and I just happily and gratefully followed along. But I don’t want you to think it’s only what Yael wants, Yael does. She asked me for input every step of the way. She always checked in with me about what she was buying, what she thought we should have at the party, and she was always conscious of budget. I wanted everything she suggested, but I know that if there had been anything I wasn’t keen to have, she would have changed it until she found something that I loved. She wanted my daughter and me to be happy with everything. We weren’t happy – that’s too meager a word – we were elated!!! Working with Yael was such a pleasant and joyful experience. And those are two words I don’t use lightly when it comes to describing planning an event.

Yael helped me style my son's upshernish as well as my living room. She is wonderful to work with! She is talented and extremely organized which is super helpful! She has an incredible eye and knows how to beautify absolutely anything!
